Overview

Air Comet was a Spanish passenger airline, formerly known as Air Plus Comet. It developed within the airline activities of Grupo Marsans and was based in Madrid. The carrier focused on scheduled international passenger services, particularly routes connecting Spain with Latin America, using wide-body aircraft for long-haul operations. After worsening financial conditions and mounting debt and financing problems, Air Comet suspended operations at the end of 2009 and subsequently entered insolvency proceedings. The brand is no longer operating.

History

Air Comet developed from the airline formerly known as Air Plus Comet. It was established in the mid-1990s and grew within the aviation activities of Grupo Marsans. Based in Madrid, the airline concentrated on international passenger services between Spain and Latin America, while also operating selected routes in Europe and other international markets. As its long-haul network expanded, Air Comet used wide-body aircraft for scheduled passenger operations and became one of the more significant airline brands associated with Grupo Marsans. In the late 2000s, intensifying competition, higher operating costs and financial pressure weakened the company. Problems involving debt and aircraft lease payments eventually disrupted flight operations and passenger services. In December 2009, Air Comet ceased all flights, leaving many passengers affected and requiring government-organized assistance. The airline subsequently entered insolvency proceedings and wound down its aviation business. The brand no longer operates commercial flights.
