Ahold accounting crisis
Ahold disclosed that promotional allowances had been overstated at U.S. Foodservice and that additional accounting irregularities affected Tops Markets, Disco and certain joint ventures. The disclosures led to management resignations, financial restatements, regulatory investigations, criminal proceedings and shareholder litigation. Dutch authorities later settled fraud charges against Ahold, while U.S. authorities pursued related matters involving the company and former executives.
