Overview

Ahaus Alstätter Eisenbahn AG (AAE) is a Swiss-based railway company specialising in the leasing of freight wagons. It was founded in 1989 to take over the concession of a 9.3 km private railway line between Ahaus and Alstätte in Germany, continuing to Enschede in the Netherlands — hence its original name, Ahaus-Enscheder Eisenbahn (AEE). The company is headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, and operates commercially in several European countries. After the original line ceased operation in 2007, AAE focused on building up its wagon fleet for both conventional freight and combined transport. It grew into Europe's leading private wagon lessor, with a fleet of around 30,000 units. In 1996 it ordered 400 Remafret-type wagons from Remafer Reims. AAE is a member of the UIC (International Union of Railways) and of the RIV organisation, which defines exchange and circulation rules between European railway networks. In 2015 AAE was acquired by VTG AG, the Hamburg-based rail logistics group. Under VTG, AAE's leasing activities are integrated into VTG's broader rail freight portfolio, which includes Europe's largest privately owned wagon fleet, rail logistics services, maintenance and workshops, and digital fleet management. VTG describes itself as a leading European rail freight company with 75,000 wagons, operations in 27 countries, and a strategy targeting climate neutrality by 2040.

History

Ahaus Alstätter Eisenbahn AG (AAE) was founded in 1989 to take over the concession of a 9.3 km private railway line between Ahaus and Alstätte in Germany, running to Enschede in the Netherlands. This origin gave the company its original name, Ahaus-Enscheder Eisenbahn (AEE). The line was operated until 2007, when operations ceased. Following the end of line operations, AAE shifted its focus to the leasing of freight wagons. It developed its fleet for both conventional freight and combined transport, and grew to become the leading private wagon lessor in Europe with a fleet of 30,000 units. In 1996, AAE ordered 400 Remafret-type wagons from Remafer Reims. The company is a member of the UIC (International Union of Railways) and of the RIV (Regolamento internazionale veicoli) organisation, which defines the rules for exchange and circulation of wagons between the different European railway networks. In 2015, AAE was acquired by VTG AG, a rail logistics company based in Hamburg, Germany. VTG, founded in 1951, is one of the leading companies in international rail freight transport, with Europe's largest privately owned rail freight wagon fleet of 75,000 wagons, operations in 27 countries, and a strategy (FOCUS) targeting climate neutrality by 2040. AAE's leasing business is now part of VTG's portfolio, which also includes rail logistics, maintenance and workshops, and the digital platform traigo.
