Overview
Agfa is an imaging and printing technology brand whose corporate history began in Germany in 1867 and whose present operating headquarters are in Mortsel, Belgium. The business was founded as Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation, commonly abbreviated as AGFA, to manufacture aniline dyes and stains. It later developed photographic chemicals, film, paper, X-ray materials, cameras, and other imaging products, becoming one of the best-known names in European photography and photographic technology. The company’s history is closely connected with the consolidation and later separation of the German chemical industry. In 1925, Agfa became part of IG Farben, with its photographic activities combined with related Bayer operations. After the Second World War and the breakup of IG Farben, Agfa re-emerged as a separate business and was re-established in 1952 as a wholly owned Bayer subsidiary. Its Belgian connection developed through L. Gevaert & Cie, founded in Antwerp in 1894 by Lieven Gevaert as a photographic-paper manufacturer. Agfa and Gevaert combined their operating businesses in 1964, and Bayer later acquired full ownership in 1981. For much of the twentieth century, Agfa was strongly associated with consumer photography. Its cameras included the Silette, Isolette, Optima, Agfamatic, Selectronic, and other families, while its photographic materials included Agfacolor, Agfachrome, Agfapan, Scala, and professional film and paper products. Agfa also produced slide projectors, enlargers, darkroom equipment, scanners, and related accessories. The company was an important participant in the transition from black-and-white photography to colour photography and in the development of photographic materials for professional, industrial, and medical applications. From the late twentieth century onward, Agfa expanded substantially into professional imaging, healthcare information technology, prepress, printing plates, digital print, and industrial inkjet. Acquisitions such as Compugraphic, Lastra, Dotrix, ProImage, GWI, Heartlab, and other specialist businesses broadened its software and systems portfolio. Healthcare activities came to include computed radiography, picture archiving and communication systems, radiology information systems, enterprise imaging, cardiology information management, and related clinical workflow tools. In graphics, the company developed prepress workflow software, offset plates, packaging solutions, digital printing systems, and inkjet technologies. Agfa withdrew from the consumer imaging division in 2004. The consumer business was transferred to AgfaPhoto GmbH through a management buyout, but that company entered bankruptcy after approximately one year. Agfa-related consumer trademarks were subsequently licensed by other companies, and products sold under the AgfaPhoto name should not automatically be treated as products manufactured by Agfa-Gevaert. Agfa itself continued selected industrial film activities, including film for aerial photography, while concentrating its corporate business on professional and industrial customers. The group has since been organised around business-to-business activities serving healthcare providers, commercial printers, publishers, packaging companies, manufacturers, and other specialised users. Its portfolio has included imaging hardware, workflow software, consumables, printing plates, digital production systems, industrial inkjet equipment, and imaging chemicals. Since 2019, the Agfa-Gevaert Group has operated with separate organisational entities for Agfa HealthCare’s information-technology activities and the broader Agfa activities covering graphics, specialty products, and imaging. In 2022, the group sold its Offset division to Aurelius, after which the divested business was renamed ECO3 in 2023. Agfa’s current identity is therefore best understood as a professional imaging, healthcare, and printing technology brand rather than as a consumer camera or film compa…
History
Agfa’s corporate history began in 1867 in Rummelsburg, then part of Berlin, where Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Carl Alexander von Martius founded Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation as a producer of dyes and stains. The company became a public limited company in 1873. Its later expansion into photographic chemistry and materials established the foundation for the Agfa name in imaging. The Agfa trademark was introduced in 1897, followed by X-ray plates and films in 1898 and cinematographic film in 1903. In 1925, Agfa became part of IG Farben during the consolidation of Germany’s chemical industry. Its photographic activities were combined with those of Bayer, including Bayer’s camera operations in Munich. Agfa also expanded internationally, including through the acquisition of the American photographic manufacturer Ansco in 1928. Agfacolor Neu, introduced in 1936, helped establish Agfa as a significant producer of colour film for amateur and professional use. The company’s wartime history includes the use of forced labour, including concentration-camp prisoners, at Agfa-related facilities. Parts of the company’s management were prosecuted after the war in the IG Farben trial. During the Allied dismantling of IG Farben, Agfa reappeared as an independent business. An Agfa plant in the Soviet occupation zone later became the basis of ORWO. In 1952, Agfa AG was re-established as a wholly owned Bayer subsidiary. Agfa’s Belgian history was linked to L. Gevaert & Cie, founded in Antwerp in 1894 by Lieven Gevaert from a photographic-paper workshop. Agfa AG and Gevaert Photo-Producten combined their operating activities in 1964, with Bayer and Gevaert each holding half of the new company. Bayer acquired Gevaert’s remaining interest in 1981, making Agfa fully Bayer-owned. During the 1980s and 1990s, Agfa broadened its professional technology portfolio. It acquired Compugraphic for prepress systems, entered computed radiography, launched picture archiving and communication systems, acquired printing-plate and proofing activities from Hoechst, and expanded through acquisitions in graphic arts, medical imaging, and industrial inspection. Apogee Prepress, introduced in 1997, was an early PDF-based prepress workflow system. Other transactions added printing films, radiology systems, medical voice recognition, industrial X-ray equipment, fonts, and healthcare information systems. In 1999, Agfa was separated from Bayer and became a listed company on the Brussels and Frankfurt exchanges. The following years brought further acquisitions in healthcare IT, prepress automation, cardiology imaging, digital printing, industrial inkjet, large-format printing, and regional healthcare systems. At the same time, Agfa discontinued its desktop scanner and digital camera businesses in 2001 and progressively reduced its dependence on consumer photography. The decisive consumer-market change came in 2004, when Agfa sold its consumer imaging division to a management-buyout company that operated as AgfaPhoto GmbH. AgfaPhoto filed for bankruptcy after about a year. The AgfaPhoto name was later licensed by other companies, meaning that subsequent consumer products carrying that label are not necessarily made by Agfa-Gevaert. Agfa retained selected industrial film production, including aerial photography materials, but its main commercial direction became business-to-business imaging and workflow technology. In 2019, the Agfa-Gevaert Group reorganised activities into Agfa HealthCare, focused on healthcare information-technology operations, and Agfa, covering graphics, specialty products, and imaging activities. The group’s business areas have included radiology solutions, offset and prepress, digital print and chemicals, and healthcare IT. In 2022, the Offset division was sold to Aurelius and renamed ECO3 in 2023. Agfa today is therefore a multinational professional-technology group and brand headquartered in Belgium, retaining a German chemical and photographic heritage while serving healthcare, printing, packaging, industrial, and other specialist markets.

Medical imaging · 1990
Healthcare imaging solutions
Agfa’s healthcare imaging portfolio has included computed radiography, digital radiography-related workflows, medical image processing, and systems for acquiring, storing, viewing, and distributing diagnostic images. These offerings support hospitals, imaging departments, and clinics moving from analogue film workflows to networked digital operations. The portfolio is designed to connect imaging equipment and clinical users rather than function as consumer photography hardware.
Healthcare software · 1994
Enterprise imaging and healthcare IT
Agfa develops healthcare information systems covering enterprise imaging, radiology information management, clinical records, workflow coordination, and image access. Historical platforms and acquisitions expanded the company from image capture into information integration across departments and institutions. The products are aimed at healthcare providers that need to manage medical images and associated data within clinical and administrative processes.
Prepress workflow software · 1997
Apogee Prepress
Apogee Prepress is Agfa’s prepress workflow platform for preparing commercial, publishing, and packaging jobs. It supports the organisation and automation of production files, imposition, proofing, output, and integration with print-plant processes. Its early use of PDF as a production-file format reflected the industry’s movement away from film-based prepress toward computerised, automated workflows.
Digital printing workflow software
Asanti
Asanti is a workflow and production-management platform for wide-format and digital print environments. It is intended to coordinate job preparation, colour management, device output, and production monitoring across professional printing operations. The product represents Agfa’s emphasis on software-controlled workflows in which hardware, consumables, files, and production scheduling are managed as an integrated system.
Packaging workflow software
Amfortis
Amfortis is associated with Agfa’s packaging-production workflow activities. It addresses the preparation and coordination of packaging print jobs, where version control, colour consistency, proofing, and repeatable production are important. The offering extends Agfa’s prepress expertise from general commercial printing into the more specialised requirements of packaging supply chains.
Printing technology · 1996
Printing plates and prepress consumables
Agfa has supplied offset printing plates, graphic films, chemicals, proofing materials, and associated prepress equipment for commercial printers, publishers, and packaging producers. These products help convert digitally prepared artwork into printing forms and support repeatable production quality. The business grew through internal development and acquisitions in printing plates, graphic arts film, and prepress technologies.
Digital printing · 2005
Industrial inkjet printing
Agfa’s industrial inkjet activities include digital printing systems, inks, software, and production technologies for specialised and large-format applications. The portfolio is aimed at industrial and professional users requiring variable data, short runs, customisation, or digitally controlled production. Acquisitions including Dotrix and Gandi Innovations strengthened the company’s capabilities in industrial and wide-format inkjet.
Specialty imaging materials
Professional and industrial films
Although Agfa withdrew from mainstream consumer imaging, it has continued selected industrial film activities, including black-and-white, colour-negative, and colour-reversal materials for specialised uses such as aerial photography. These materials should be distinguished from AgfaPhoto-branded consumer films produced or distributed under later trademark licences by other companies.
Consumer photography
Historical Agfa cameras and photographic materials
Agfa historically produced cameras, photographic films, papers, slide projectors, scanners, enlargers, developing tanks, and darkroom accessories. Camera families included Silette, Isolette, Optima, Selectronic, Agfamatic, and related models, while film lines included Agfacolor, Agfachrome, Agfapan, Scala, and professional products. Most of these consumer lines are discontinued or belong to Agfa’s historical rather than current business.
