Overview
Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland gemeinnützige GmbH is a non-profit regional operator of hospitals, elderly care and rehabilitation facilities, medical care centres (MVZ) and social institutions in central Germany. Until the end of 2019 the company was known as edia.con gemeinnützige GmbH. It is part of the Agaplesion group, which holds 60% of its shares; further shareholders are the Bethanien Diakonissen-Stiftung in Frankfurt am Main (24.9%), the Diakoniewerk Martha-Maria e.V. in Nuremberg (7.7%), the Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenhaus Leipzig e.V. (7.3%) and the Anhaltische Diakonissenanstalt Dessau (0.1%). The company is rooted in Protestant diaconal hospital work in the new German federal states after reunification. The group's facilities include the Evangelisches Diakonissenkrankenhaus Leipzig, a 250-bed general hospital treating more than 14,000 inpatients and around 25,000 outpatients per year with seven specialist clinics, a certified bowel and vascular centre and several attending-physician clinics; the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz, a 300-bed general hospital with five specialist clinics and a prostate cancer centre certified by the German Cancer Society; the Fachkrankenhaus Bethanien Hochweitzschen, a psychiatric centre with 121 beds and 47 day-clinic places; and the Fachkrankenhaus Bethanien Plauen, a 50-bed facility for ENT, head and neck surgery, attending surgery and anaesthesiology, plus a speech therapy practice. The group also runs elderly care homes, hospice and palliative services, medical care centres under the edia.med brand and the MSG Management- und Servicegesellschaft für soziale Einrichtungen mbH, which also provides services to institutions outside the group. With a capacity of around 900 hospital beds, the group treats more than 34,000 inpatients and over 48,000 outpatients annually. In cooperation with other institutions it offers 75 kindergarten places; in elderly care the group and its partners have 246 places. In Dessau the Anhalt-Hospiz has eight places. The four medical care centres, together with their branches, are present at seven locations. The group also includes three vocational schools in Dessau, Leipzig and Chemnitz with a total of 222 training places, offering training in health and nursing care, nursing assistance and elderly care assistance. The company's history began immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, when ways were sought to make Protestant hospital work in the new federal states, especially in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, sustainable. In 1998 the Diakoniekliniken Leipzig gemeinnützige GmbH was founded as the starting point for cooperation between the Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenhaus Leipzig and the Bethanien Krankenhaus Chemnitz gemeinnützige GmbH. The company was renamed Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland at the end of 2019. Its headquarters have been in Leipzig since November 2013. Since 1 January 2021 Dirk Herrmann has been managing director. The Diakonissenkrankenhaus Dessau left the sponsorship of Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland at the turn of 2020/2021 and joined the municipal hospital group of Dessau.
History
The history of Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland begins immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. At that time there were already considerations about how Protestant hospital work in the new federal states, especially in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, could be made sustainable under the new conditions. In a first step, a cooperation was formed with the Diakoniefördergesellschaft Speyer/Dresden (DFG), which provided advice and support and paved the way for cooperation between the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Diakonissenkrankenhaus Leipzig, the Evangelisch-methodistischen Bethanien hospitals in Chemnitz, Leipzig and Plauen, and the Diakonissenkrankenhaus Dessau. In 1998 the Diakoniekliniken Leipzig gemeinnützige GmbH was founded, laying the foundation for cooperation between the Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenhaus Leipzig and the Bethanien Krankenhaus Chemnitz gemeinnützige GmbH. With the contribution of the Evangelisch-methodistisches Krankenhaus Bethanien Leipzig in 2000, 70% of the shares in the Ev. Diakonissenkrankenhaus Leipzig gemeinnützige GmbH were transferred to the new company. This was followed in 2003 by an engagement in Dessau. In 2006 the Ev. Diakoniegesellschaft Mitteldeutschland gemeinnützige GmbH was founded, and the Bethanien Krankenhaus Chemnitz gemeinnützige GmbH took over sponsorship of the Fachkrankenhaus für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie Bethanien Hochweitzschen. In 2002 the MSG Management- und Servicegesellschaft für soziale Einrichtungen mbH was created to handle management, organisational, consulting and service tasks jointly and efficiently within the group; this service provider also takes on tasks for institutions outside the edia.con group. With the transfer of the shares of the subsidiaries in 2008, edia.con gGmbH became the controlling entity (Organträger) of all companies directly and indirectly associated with it. Since 1 January 2013, for the first time since the founding of edia.con, a businessman and a theologian, Hubertus Jaeger and Pastor Frank Eibisch, have led the management. Since November 2013 the company headquarters has been in Leipzig, the geographical centre of the holding area. In 2014 Mr Möllering, previously responsible only for the Leipzig hospital, was appointed regional managing director for the North/East region. Since 1 January 2021 Dirk Herrmann has been managing director of Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland gGmbH. The Agaplesion gAG holds 60% of the shares. Further shareholders are the Bethanien Diakonissen-Stiftung, Frankfurt/Main (24.9%), the Diakoniewerk Martha-Maria e.V., Nuremberg (7.7%), the Ev.-Luth. Diakonissenhaus Leipzig e.V. (7.3%) and the Anhaltische Diakonissenanstalt Dessau (0.1%). Until the end of 2019 the company was called edia.con gemeinnützige GmbH. On 18 December 2020 the contracts for the merger of the Städtisches Klinikum and the Diakonissenkrankenhaus Dessau were signed; with the transfer of operations at the turn of 2020/2021, the Diakonissenkrankenhaus Dessau left the sponsorship of Agaplesion Mitteldeutschland and joined the municipal hospital group.
