Overview

Afsnit P was a Danish online journal and virtual exhibition space dedicated to the borderland between literature and visual art. Active from 1999 to 2009, it was edited by C.Y. Frostholm and Karen Wagner, who founded it together with Charlotte Hansen. The editorial team also included Andreas Brøgger, Martin Deichmann and Peter Kirkhoff Eriksen at various points. The project grew out of a poetry bookshop and gallery of the same name that operated in Nansensgade in Copenhagen between 1994 and 1998, making Afsnit P a digital continuation of an existing physical literary-artistic venue. As a net journal and virtual exhibition room, Afsnit P published and curated projects that explored visual poetry, concrete poetry, net art and text-image experiments. Among its best-known initiatives were "Hvad er visuel poesi?" (2000), "ON OFF – net art online and in print" (2000), "Afsnit Ps nye Parlør" (2001), "konkretpoesi.se – svensk konkret poesi i 1960'erne" (2005) and "Ord i øjet – ny nordisk visuel poesi" (2006–2008). It presented online exhibitions with and about Danish authors and artists such as Tom Kristensen, Robert Corydon, Jørgen Sonne, Simon Grotrian, Morten Søndergaard, Mette Moestrup, Hans Sydow, Jasper Sebastian Stürup and Kristofer Hultenberg, as well as international figures including Norwegian Ottar Ormstad and Monica Aasprong, Swedish Johannes Heldén and Oskar Ponnert, Finland-Swedish Cia Rinne, American Lewis Koch, French Franck Mouteault and British David Bellingham. Afsnit P received recognition within Danish cultural circles: it was named Cultural Journal of the Year (Årets Kulturtidsskrift) in 2005, received the Sven Dalsgaard grant (Sven Dalsgaard-legatet) in 2004 and the art librarians' prize Den blå Abe in 2003. The original site at www.afsnitp.dk was finally taken down in 2025, but many versions remain accessible through the Internet Archive and the Royal Danish Library's web archive for researchers. An archive page maintained by C.Y. Frostholm at cyf.dk/afsnitp-arkiv documents the project's major and minor works, some of which can still be experienced despite occasional dead links.

History

Afsnit P emerged from a physical poetry bookshop and gallery of the same name that operated in Nansensgade in Copenhagen from 1994 to 1998. Building on that foundation, the online journal and virtual exhibition space was launched in 1999 by C.Y. Frostholm, Karen Wagner and Charlotte Hansen. The project was conceived as a Danish net journal and virtual exhibition room for the borderland between literature and visual art, a niche that was then largely unexplored in Denmark. Throughout its active decade (1999–2009), Afsnit P produced a steady stream of online exhibitions, publications and net art projects. Early milestones included "Hvad er visuel poesi?" (2000) and "ON OFF – net art online and in print" (2000), followed by "Afsnit Ps nye Parlør" (2001). The journal also presented works by a wide range of Danish and international authors and artists, including Tom Kristensen, Robert Corydon, Jørgen Sonne, Simon Grotrian, Morten Søndergaard, Mette Moestrup, Hans Sydow, Jasper Sebastian Stürup, Kristofer Hultenberg, Ottar Ormstad, Monica Aasprong, Johannes Heldén, Oskar Ponnert, Cia Rinne, Lewis Koch, Franck Mouteault and David Bellingham. In the mid-2000s, Afsnit P expanded its scope with projects such as "konkretpoesi.se – svensk konkret poesi i 1960'erne" (2005) and "Ord i øjet – ny nordisk visuel poesi" (2006–2008), which surveyed Nordic visual poetry. The project's contributions were recognized with the art librarians' prize Den blå Abe in 2003, the Sven Dalsgaard grant in 2004 and the title of Cultural Journal of the Year (Årets Kulturtidsskrift) in 2005. After the active period ended in 2009, the original website remained online for years but was finally taken down in 2025. Versions of the site are preserved by the Internet Archive and the Royal Danish Library's web archive. An archive page at cyf.dk/afsnitp-arkiv, maintained by C.Y. Frostholm, provides an overview of the project's major and minor works, some of which can still be experienced, albeit with occasional dead links.
