Overview

AFRY AB is a Sweden-based professional-services group that provides engineering, design, advisory, digitalisation and management-consulting services. The company works mainly with complex capital projects, technical systems and operational or strategic challenges in energy, industry, infrastructure, transportation, buildings and urban development. Its clients include industrial companies, utilities, infrastructure owners, developers, public authorities and other organisations undertaking technically demanding projects. The business traces its origins to Södra Sveriges Ångpanneförening, founded in Malmö in 1895. The organisation was established to protect the interests of owners of steam generators and pressure vessels, with a practical emphasis on inspecting boilers and reducing the risk of industrial accidents. Its activities broadened over time. A related central and northern Swedish association was established in Stockholm in 1897, and consulting activities developed alongside inspection work. Electrical engineering was added to the associations' scope in 1910. The Swedish organisations merged in 1964 as Ångpanneföreningen, creating a nationwide engineering and inspection platform. The company shortened its name to ÅF in 2008 and continued to expand beyond its original inspection and steam-technology heritage. Its capabilities increasingly covered engineering design, technical advice, project management and consulting for energy, industrial and built-environment clients. In 2010, the operations of ÅF-Kontroll were sold to DEKRA, marking a further separation between the group's consulting activities and certain inspection operations. A major transformation took place in 2019, when ÅF acquired Finnish consulting and engineering company Pöyry. The transaction combined ÅF's Nordic engineering and design network with Pöyry's international expertise in energy, industry and infrastructure projects. The combined company initially operated as ÅF Pöyry and subsequently adopted AFRY as its group-wide brand. The new identity was intended to present the combined business as one international consultancy rather than as two legacy organisations. AFRY is organised around three broad divisions: Energy; Industry; and Transportation & Places. Its Energy work includes power generation, transmission, energy systems, renewable energy and related technical and strategic advisory assignments. Industry services cover engineering, automation, process technologies, production facilities, operations and industrial transformation. Transportation & Places covers transport infrastructure, buildings, cities and wider urban or regional development. Digitalisation, sustainability and management advice cut across these sector areas. The company is primarily a project-based business. It may provide feasibility studies, owner’s engineering, concept and detailed design, permitting support, procurement and implementation assistance, project and programme management, technical due diligence, operational improvement and strategic advice. AFRY's international structure allows it to combine local market knowledge with specialist expertise for cross-border clients and large infrastructure or energy programmes. The company has reported a workforce of approximately 18,000 experts in 40 countries. AFRY remains listed on Nasdaq Stockholm and continues to operate as a multidisciplinary business-to-business consultancy rather than a consumer-facing product brand.

History

AFRY's history begins in Malmö on 23 February 1895, when Södra Sveriges Ångpanneförening, or the Southern Swedish Steam Generator Association, was founded. Its original role was closely connected to industrial safety: the association represented owners of steam generators and pressure vessels and carried out recurring boiler inspections intended to prevent accidents. This foundation gave the organisation an early technical-services identity based on independent inspection, engineering knowledge and practical risk management. A Central and Northern Swedish Steam Generator Association was established in Stockholm in 1897. Its inspectors also began providing consultancy services, expanding the organisations' role beyond formal inspection. In 1910, the two associations broadened their activities to include electrical engineering, reflecting the growing importance of electrification and industrial technology. They merged in 1964 under the name Ångpanneföreningen, commonly abbreviated as ÅF, and the unified organisation covered the Swedish market. ÅF progressively developed from a steam-boiler association into a broad engineering and consultancy business. On 5 May 2008, Ångpanneföreningen formally changed its name to ÅF. Its work increasingly included technical design, project management, industrial development, energy advice and services for the built environment. In 2010, ÅF sold the operations of ÅF-Kontroll to DEKRA, reducing the connection between the group and its historical inspection activities while allowing the consultancy business to focus on engineering and advisory services. The decisive strategic change came in 2019, when ÅF acquired Finnish consulting and engineering company Pöyry PLC. Pöyry brought additional international reach and expertise in energy, industrial projects and infrastructure. The combined organisation first operated as ÅF Pöyry and then introduced AFRY as its shared brand. The rebranding expressed the intent to operate as one international group while retaining the engineering traditions of both predecessor companies. AFRY's contemporary activities are grouped into Energy, Industry, and Transportation & Places. The Energy division works with power, energy systems and related infrastructure. Industry serves manufacturing, process industries and other industrial clients with engineering, automation, production, operational and digital services. Transportation & Places addresses transport networks, buildings, cities and urban or regional development. Sustainability, environmental advice, digitalisation and management consulting support all three areas. The resulting organisation is a global professional-services company rather than a manufacturer of branded consumer goods. It delivers studies, designs, technical analyses, project and programme management, implementation support and strategic advice, often as part of large public or private investment programmes. AFRY has around 18,000 experts in 40 countries and remains listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. In 2025, the group marked 130 years since the founding of its Swedish predecessor.
