Overview
The African Union of the Blind (AFUB) is a continental non-governmental organization (NGO) of national organizations and associations of and for blind and partially sighted people in Africa. It was established in October 1987 in Tunis, Tunisia, under the auspices of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). AFUB's vision is a continent where blind and partially sighted persons enjoy equal rights, social inclusion and full participation in development. Its mission is to strengthen member organizations and create unity of purpose among them through capacity building and advocacy in partnership with governments, international agencies and other stakeholders. The organization operates across the whole African continent, with national member organizations from 53 African countries and programs in all these countries. Membership is organized into five regions: Central Africa (10 countries), East Africa (12 countries), North Africa (6 countries), Southern Africa (10 countries), and West Africa (15 countries). Each region has a regional assembly that meets at least six months before the union's general assembly, and elects a regional chair who later becomes a member of the AFUB board of officers. AFUB's strategic focus is advocacy, serving as the collective voice of blind and partially sighted persons in Africa for more than thirty years. It advocates with various stakeholders to influence inclusion of the needs and concerns of blind and partially sighted persons in their programs and services, particularly targeting women and youth to build their capacity as self-advocates. Through its human rights project, AFUB works to protect and promote the human, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of people who are blind and partially sighted in Africa. Current projects include promoting the African Disability Protocol in Congo (Brazzaville), training on the African Disability Protocol in Malawi, promoting ratification of the African Disability Protocol in Lesotho, and training on the African Disability Protocol in Togo. The AFUB board includes representatives from Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Liberia, Congo Brazzaville, South Africa, and Ghana, with the president based in Morocco.
