Aerotec S/A Indústria Aeronáutica was a Brazilian aircraft manufacturer established in 1962 in São José dos Campos with support from Brazil’s Department of Science and Aerospace Technology, known in Portuguese as the Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Aeroespacial (DCTA). Its creation formed part of the development of Brazil’s aerospace-industrial capabilities around São José dos Campos, which later became the country’s principal aviation and defense-manufacturing center. The company’s best-known aircraft was the Aerotec A.122 Uirapuru, a two-seat trainer developed for military and civilian use. Production began in the late 1960s, and the type was supplied to the Brazilian Air Force as well as to civilian operators. Aerotec also produced approximately thirty Uirapurus for the civilian market. The aircraft found export customers in Bolivia and Paraguay, giving the company a modest regional presence beyond Brazil. The Uirapuru’s role as a basic trainer reflected the needs of military and civil aviation organizations for a relatively simple, locally produced piston-powered aircraft. After the initial aircraft-production phase, Aerotec’s business became increasingly connected to Brazil’s emerging aerospace supply chain. The company produced components primarily for Embraer until 1980. This represented a shift from concentrating on complete aircraft toward industrial support and component manufacturing for a larger Brazilian aircraft producer. Aerotec therefore occupied two roles in Brazil’s aviation history: it was an independent designer and builder of light aircraft, and it was also a supplier contributing to the wider production base of the national aerospace sector. Around 1980, the Brazilian Air Force expressed interest in a higher-performance derivative of the Uirapuru. Aerotec responded with the A.132 Uirapuru II prototype, which incorporated a revised cockpit canopy and an enlarged tail assembly. The intended military order did not materialize, however, and the version was produced only in very small numbers for Bolivia. The unsuccessful procurement effort limited the aircraft’s commercial and military development and appears to have reinforced Aerotec’s dependence on component work rather than a broad family of independently produced aircraft. In 1987, Aerotec was acquired by Embraer. This acquisition brought the company’s operations under the control of Brazil’s leading aircraft manufacturer and marked the end of Aerotec as an independent aircraft brand and corporate manufacturer. Aerotec’s historical importance lies less in the scale of its output than in its contribution to Brazil’s early aerospace-industrial ecosystem, its production of the Uirapuru trainer, its exports to neighboring South American countries, and its role as an Embraer component supplier before the acquisition.

Aerotec was founded in 1962 in São José dos Campos, Brazil, with institutional support from the Department of Science and Aerospace Technology. The company emerged during the formation of Brazil’s modern aerospace and defense-industrial base, a development closely associated with the technical institutions and aviation companies established in the São José dos Campos region. Its principal aircraft program was the A.122 Uirapuru, a two-seat trainer. Aerotec began producing the aircraft in the late 1960s for the Brazilian Air Force and civilian users. Around thirty aircraft were built for the civilian market, while additional examples served military purposes. The Uirapuru also achieved limited export success in South America, with aircraft delivered to Bolivia and Paraguay. These exports made the type one of Aerotec’s clearest contributions to Brazil’s early regional aviation presence. Aerotec later shifted much of its activity toward aerospace manufacturing support. Until 1980, it produced components mainly for Embraer, which was becoming Brazil’s dominant aircraft manufacturer. This supplier role linked Aerotec to a broader industrial system and reduced its dependence on developing and marketing complete aircraft under its own name. In approximately 1980, the Brazilian Air Force considered an improved Uirapuru derivative. Aerotec built the A.132 Uirapuru II prototype with a redesigned cockpit canopy and a larger tail unit intended to improve the aircraft’s performance and operational characteristics. The Brazilian Air Force ultimately did not order the aircraft. Only a few examples were produced, and these were associated with Bolivia rather than a large Brazilian military production program. Aerotec was acquired by Embraer in 1987. The transaction ended the company’s independent corporate existence and placed its capabilities within Brazil’s principal aircraft manufacturer. Aerotec’s legacy is consequently associated with the Uirapuru trainer family, early Brazilian aircraft exports, the development of local aerospace manufacturing expertise, and component production for Embraer.
