Aero Airlines

Aero Airlines was a regional airline based in Tallinn, Estonia, established in 2000 and operating commercial flights from March 2002 until January 2008. The carrier was created to serve short-haul markets in the Baltic region and developed an operating relationship with Finnair, using Finnair's AY designation on its flights. Its principal bases were Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and Tallinn Airport, now known as Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport. The airline's scheduled network was focused on Estonia-Finland connectivity rather than a broad independent international network. By December 2007, its listed destinations were Helsinki, Tallinn, Turku and Vaasa. This positioned Aero as a regional connector between the Estonian capital and Finnish cities, with Helsinki providing access to the wider Finnair network. Although Aero Airlines had its own airline identity and the Estonian designator EE, its flights were marketed and operated within the Finnair system under the AY designation. Aero Airlines was initially owned by Aero Holding, which held 51%, and Finnair, which held 49%. Ownership was subsequently transferred entirely to Finnair. The name referred to Aero O/Y, the historic predecessor associated with Finnair's early aviation history, originally founded in 1923. This naming connection reflected the carrier's close relationship with Finnair, although the modern Aero Airlines was a separate Estonian operating company founded decades later. The carrier used ATR 72-201 turboprop aircraft, including aircraft that had previously been operated by Finnair. These aircraft were suited to the short regional sectors and comparatively modest passenger volumes served by the airline. In March 2007, Aero Airlines had 128 employees. During 2007, it reduced its operations, and its final flight took place on 6 January 2008. After the shutdown, its routes were operated by Flybe and Finnair, while the last two ATR aircraft were sold to UTair. Aero Airlines is therefore a historical, defunct airline brand rather than an active passenger carrier.

In March 2007, the carrier employed 128 people. During the same year, Aero reduced the scale of its activities. The contraction culminated in the final flight on 6 January 2008, after which the airline ceased operations. Flybe and Finnair took over operation of the routes, and the last two Aero ATR aircraft were sold to UTair. Aero Airlines consequently became a defunct Estonian airline brand.
