Overview
Aerion Corporation was an American aerospace company established by Texas businessman and investor Robert Bass to commercialize practical supersonic aviation. Based in Reno, Nevada, the privately held company focused primarily on business jets and advanced aircraft technologies rather than operating an airline or producing a conventional subsonic aircraft. Its central technical proposition was a combination of supersonic natural laminar-flow wing design and so-called boomless cruise, intended to reduce drag, fuel consumption, and the disruptive sonic boom normally associated with supersonic flight. The company began developing a supersonic business jet in 2004. Its first major concept, the Aerion Supersonic Business Jet, or SBJ, was designed for roughly eight to twelve passengers and was intended to cruise at approximately Mach 1.6. Aerion sought an established business-aircraft manufacturer as a development partner and collected letters of intent while refining the aircraft. In 2014, the concept was enlarged and reintroduced as the AS2, a twelve-passenger supersonic business jet with a targeted cruise speed of about Mach 1.4 and a projected range of approximately 4,750 nautical miles. The design was intended to fly below the speed of sound over land where regulations restricted supersonic operations. Aerion’s technology activities expanded beyond the company’s own aircraft. In 2011 it established Aerion Technologies Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary, responding to interest from aircraft manufacturers in its natural-laminar-flow research, testing data, and design tools. Aerion argued that these methods could also improve the efficiency and speed of future transonic, subsonic, civil, and military aircraft. The company therefore positioned itself both as an aircraft developer and as a holder of potentially transferable aerodynamic expertise. The AS2 project passed through several strategic partnerships. Airbus became a partner in 2014, Lockheed Martin replaced Airbus in 2017, and Boeing replaced Lockheed Martin in 2019. General Electric unveiled the Affinity engine intended for the aircraft in 2018. Aerion also developed commercial and infrastructure plans around the program, including a proposed production campus at Melbourne Orlando International Airport in Florida, a carbon-neutrality initiative with Carbon Engineering, and a passenger-services partnership with Jetex. Aerion presented the AS2 as a lower-emission alternative to earlier generations of supersonic aircraft. It was planned to operate without afterburners, use advanced aerodynamic design, and eventually incorporate sustainable or carbon-neutral fuel pathways. In March 2021, the company announced the AS3, a larger hypersonic airliner concept for approximately fifty passengers, with a proposed Mach 4 speed and a target range of about 3,800 nautical miles. The AS3 reflected Aerion’s ambition to move beyond business aviation into faster commercial air transport, but it remained a development concept. Aerion’s plans ultimately depended on raising several billion dollars for engineering, certification, tooling, and production. On May 21, 2021, the company announced that it would cease operations because it had been unable to secure the capital required to continue. At the time, Aerion reported 93 AS2 orders and customer deposits that it said would be returned, but the aircraft had not entered production or certification. Boeing chief executive Dave Calhoun later said Boeing had concluded that the supersonic project was not sufficiently meaningful to its market position, returns, or core technology base. Aerion consequently became a prominent example of a high-profile supersonic aviation venture that developed substantial concepts and partnerships but did not reach manufacturing.
History
Aerion Corporation was founded in 2003 by Robert Bass as a privately backed aerospace startup dedicated to commercializing supersonic flight. The company began developing supersonic business-jet designs in 2004, at a time when advances in computational aerodynamics and composite structures were renewing interest in privately operated high-speed aircraft. Aerion’s approach centered on natural laminar flow, a technique intended to keep airflow attached over a larger portion of the wing and thereby reduce drag. The company also promoted boomless-cruise concepts intended to lessen the ground-level sonic disturbance produced by supersonic flight. The first major aircraft proposal was the Aerion Supersonic Business Jet, or SBJ. It was presented as an eight-to-twelve-passenger aircraft capable of approximately Mach 1.6 travel and a range of up to about 4,000 nautical miles. Aerion sought to work with an established business-aircraft manufacturer because the projected development effort was beyond the normal scale of a small startup. The company reported receiving dozens of letters of intent while refining the concept. In May 2011, Aerion established Aerion Technologies Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary. The new unit was created after aircraft manufacturers showed interest in Aerion’s natural-laminar-flow research, test data, and design methods. Aerion maintained that its aerodynamic technologies could be applied not only to supersonic aircraft but also to transonic, subsonic, civil, and military platforms. In 2019, Vice also became chairman of the board, succeeding Bass after Boeing’s involvement was announced. The company continued to build an industrial and commercial ecosystem around the AS2. In April 2020, it announced a planned production facility at Melbourne Orlando International Airport in Florida and intended to relocate its headquarters to the Aerion Park campus. The proposed facility was associated with a projected investment of $375 million and an ambition to deliver aircraft commercially in 2027. Aerion also announced a 2020 agreement with Carbon Engineering to explore direct-air-capture and carbon-neutral capabilities, and it partnered with Jetex on future travel arrangements for AS2 passengers. The AS2 program was marketed as a cleaner alternative to earlier supersonic aircraft. Aerion expected the aircraft to use engines without afterburners, to benefit from lower-drag wing technology, and ultimately to operate with sustainable or carbon-neutral fuel pathways. General Electric unveiled the Affinity engine concept for the aircraft in 2018.
