Overview
AEON Yonezawa (イオン米沢店) is a general merchandise store (GMS) located in Kasuga 2-chome, Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. It is operated and managed by AEON Tohoku Co., Ltd., a regional operating company of the AEON Group. The store opened on March 4, 1994 as Yonezawa Saty (米沢サティ), developed by Tohoku Nichii (later Mycal Tohoku), and was rebranded as AEON Yonezawa on March 1, 2011 following the integration of the Saty chain into the AEON brand. The store serves as a core retail facility in Yonezawa, offering food, apparel, household goods, health and beauty products, and a range of specialty tenant shops. It also includes the AEON Cinema Yonezawa, a cinema complex that opened in 1998 as Warner Mycal Cinemas Yonezawa. The store is part of AEON's nationwide network and reflects the group's multi-format retail strategy in regional Japan.
History
The history of AEON Yonezawa is intertwined with the retail development of Yonezawa City. In the mid-1960s, supermarkets such as Kakudai, Jujiya, Itoya, and Midoriya began operating in Yonezawa, intensifying competition. In response, the city and the Yonezawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry planned a large-scale retail core on the former site of Yonezawa City Hall. Initially, plans called for a 'Yonezawa Nakago' department store jointly funded by local capital and Nakago (based in Fukushima City) on the main city hall site, and a cooperative department store 'Azuma' on the annex site. However, Onuma, based in Yamagata City, also applied to open a Yonezawa store, leading to strong opposition from local merchants against two simultaneous department stores and outside capital. After deliberations, Onuma Yonezawa opened in November 1970, but Yonezawa Nakago did not open, and the Azuma plan failed, marking the collapse of the administrative-led commercial core plan. Following this, the Yonezawa Shopping Center opened in October 1971 on the former annex site, developed by local supermarket operator Kakudai Food in partnership with Jusco. It operated as a quasi-department store under dummy companies to avoid Department Store Law regulations, with a sales floor area of about 6,175 m². It later became a Type 1 Large-Scale Retail Store and continued as Jusco Yonezawa until Jusco withdrew in 1991, leading to closure. Meanwhile, the Yonezawa Family Department Store opened in November 1972 on the former main city hall site, developed by local clothing retailer Kusakari in partnership with Nichii. It also operated as a quasi-department store, with a sales floor area of about 5,500 m². It was renamed Sanho-Yu Yonezawa in 1989 and closed in January 1994. The current AEON Yonezawa store opened on March 4, 1994 as Yonezawa Saty, developed by Tohoku Nichii (later Mycal Tohoku) along the Yonezawa Ring Road in the Kasuga 2-chome suburb. Its opening led to the closure of Sanho-Yu Yonezawa and the closure of the Yonezawa Shopping Center, causing the city center to lose its retail core. In September 2001, the store was transferred from Mycal Tohoku to Mycal headquarters, becoming a directly operated store. However, on September 14, 2001, Mycal filed for civil rehabilitation, effectively collapsing. With support from AEON, Mycal switched to corporate reorganization in November 2001 and began carrying AEON's private brand 'Topvalu'. On March 1, 2011, all Saty stores were rebranded as AEON, and the store became AEON Yonezawa. On March 1, 2020, with the establishment of AEON Tohoku Co., Ltd., store management and food floors were transferred to AEON Tohoku. On September 1, 2021, apparel, housing and leisure, and H&BC floors were also transferred to AEON Tohoku following the integration of AEON Tohoku and AEON Retail Tohoku. The store continues to operate as a key retail destination in Yonezawa.
