Overview
AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari is a shopping center operated by AEON TOWN Co., Ltd. in Tomari-Koyanagi-cho, Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. It is part of the AEON Group's AEON TOWN community shopping center network. The site was originally developed on the former Tomari factory grounds of Toa Spinning (now Toa Corporation) jointly by Toa and JUSCO (now AEON), and opened on March 15, 1995 as "Power City Yokkaichi." At opening it was an open-mall shopping center of about 100,000 m² with nine buildings and 28 tenants, including category killers. It was notable for the simultaneous first opening of AEON Group's then-new formats MaxValu and Megamart, and for the second MaxValu store in Japan after the Esashi store. Other large tenants included Toys "R" Us and a Sega Enterprises entertainment facility of over 5,000 m². In 2001 the core MaxValu Yokkaichi store's operation was transferred from JUSCO to MaxValu Chubu. In 2011, as AEON Retail's small and mid-sized shopping centers were entrusted to AEON TOWN, the facility was renamed from Power City Yokkaichi to AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari on November 21, 2011. The old facility closed on February 28, 2018 for rebuilding. Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 29, and Super Viva Home Yokkaichi-Tomari opened first on April 24, 2019. After a tree-planting ceremony for AEON's "Furusato no Mori" initiative, the main building and all stores had a grand opening on November 16, 2019. At that time the core MaxValu Yokkaichi store was renamed MaxValu Yokkaichi-Tomari and its operator changed to MaxValu Tokai, which had absorbed MaxValu Chubu on September 1, 2019. At full opening it was the second-largest AEON TOWN in Japan after AEON TOWN Aira in Kagoshima Prefecture. The rebuilt center has 108 stores, of which 22 are first-in-Mie-Prefecture, 45 are first-in-Yokkaichi, and 22 are local companies headquartered in Mie Prefecture. The official website lists the address as 4-5-1 Tomari-Koyanagi-cho, Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, and provides notices, events, shop news, and a floor guide. The nearest bus stop was moved onto the site and renamed from "Tomari-cho Kita" to "AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari" on February 1, 2020.
History
The site of AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari was originally the Tomari factory of Toa Spinning (now Toa Corporation). It was redeveloped jointly by Toa and JUSCO (now AEON) and opened on March 15, 1995 as "Power City Yokkaichi," AEON's first power center. The open-mall center occupied about 100,000 m² with nine buildings and 28 tenants at opening. It brought together large stores that AEON Group was then developing outside its general merchandise store business: MaxValu and Megamart opened simultaneously for the first time, and Keiyo JUSCO's "Big Barn" also opened. The MaxValu store was the second in Japan after the Esashi store in Iwate Prefecture. Non-AEON large tenants included Toys "R" Us and a Sega Enterprises entertainment facility of over 5,000 m² called "Galbo." On August 20, 2001, operation of the core MaxValu Yokkaichi store was transferred from JUSCO to MaxValu Chubu through a company split (absorption-type demerger). As AEON Retail's small and mid-sized shopping centers were entrusted to AEON TOWN, the facility came under AEON TOWN's management and was renamed from "Power City Yokkaichi" to "AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari" on November 21, 2011. The old facility closed all sections on February 28, 2018 for rebuilding. AEON TOWN held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 29, 2018 and began full-scale construction. Super Viva Home Yokkaichi-Tomari opened ahead of the rest on April 24, 2019. Before the opening, a tree-planting ceremony for AEON's "Furusato no Mori" (hometown forest) initiative was held on the site on October 12, 2019. On November 16, 2019, all stores including the main building had their grand opening. At that time the core MaxValu Yokkaichi store was renamed MaxValu Yokkaichi-Tomari, and its operating company changed to MaxValu Tokai, which had absorbed MaxValu Chubu on September 1, 2019; this was the first store opened after the two companies merged. At full opening it was the second-largest AEON TOWN in Japan after AEON TOWN Aira in Aira City, Kagoshima Prefecture. On February 1, 2020, the nearest bus stop was moved onto the site and renamed from "Tomari-cho Kita" to "AEON TOWN Yokkaichi-Tomari." The rebuilt center has 108 stores, of which 22 are first in Mie Prefecture, 45 are first in Yokkaichi, and 22 are local companies headquartered in Mie Prefecture. The official website provides notices, events, shop news, and a floor guide, and lists the address as 4-5-1 Tomari-Koyanagi-cho, Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture.
