Overview
AEON TOWN Takanosu is a shopping center located in Kitaakita, Akita Prefecture, Japan, managed and operated by AEON TOWN Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the AEON Group. The center opened in June 2008 as "AEON TOWN Takanosu Shopping Center," anchored by MaxValu Takanosu. It was renamed AEON TOWN Takanosu in September 2012 after being transferred from MaxValu Tohoku to AEON TOWN. The facility is a single-story building housing The Big Takanosu (a discount grocery store operated by AEON Tohoku) and a specialty store arcade, with additional standalone stores arranged around the parking lot. The site includes a post office, a JA bank ATM, a gas station, and various retail and service tenants. The center serves the local community of Kitaakita City and the surrounding area, with free parking for 1,560 cars and 200 bicycles. It is accessible by car from Takanosu Interchange on the Akita Expressway, by train from JR Takanosu Station, and by bus. The shopping center has a long history dating back to a 1992 planned Jusco entry that was stalled by a land dispute, eventually opening 15 years later under MaxValu Tohoku.
History
The history of AEON TOWN Takanosu dates back to June 1992, when Jusco announced plans to open a store along National Route 105 in the former Takanosu Town, responding to requests from local commercial interests. Land acquisition negotiations began, but in August of the same year, it was discovered that a portion of the planned site had been acquired by Itoku (now Itoku Holdings). This led to a fierce land acquisition dispute between Jusco and Itoku, with local commercial parties supporting Jusco. Takanosu Town attempted mediation, but neither side would compromise, and the large-scale commercial facility plan stalled. A sign reading "Jusco Planned Site" remained for a long time. AEON abandoned the original site and announced a new plan to open in the adjacent Sakae district of Kitaakita City. The project entity was changed from AEON to MaxValu Tohoku, and negotiations with landowners began. On July 23, 2007, a notification was filed with Akita Prefecture under the Large-Scale Retail Store Location Law as "(Tentative) AEON TOWN Takanosu." In June 2008, "AEON TOWN Takanosu Shopping Center" opened, anchored by "MaxValu Takanosu." This was 15 years after the initial 1992 announcement. The core store, MaxValu Takanosu, was preceded by "Doyu Takanosu," operated by Doyu. In March 2002, MaxValu Tohoku made Doyu a subsidiary, and in May of the same year, the store was renamed "MaxValu Takanosu." It was relocated when the shopping center opened. In October 2011, the store converted from a supermarket format to a discount format and reopened as "The Big Takanosu." The single-story The Big building houses The Big Takanosu and a specialty store arcade, with standalone stores arranged around the parking lot. Part of the land is owned by the Akita Takanosu Agricultural Cooperative, so the cooperative's ATM and a self-service gas station are also located there. In 2009, "Shinrai no Mori Akita Takanosu," the first store of Dynam's new format "Shinrai no Mori" and Dynam's 300th store, opened. On the land disputed between Jusco and Itoku, Itoku built a commercial facility named "Takanosu Mall," which opened on May 21, 2008. On July 23, 2012, the shopping center was transferred to AEON TOWN Co., Ltd., along with AEON TOWN Hiraka Shopping Center (Aomori Prefecture) and AEON TOWN Omagari Fukuda Shopping Center (Akita Prefecture). On September 1, 2012, the name was changed from "AEON TOWN Takanosu Shopping Center" to "AEON TOWN Takanosu" (with Takanosu written in kanji). Subsequent developments include the opening of a comprehensive welfare consultation desk "Hidamari" in September 2016, the relocation of the Kitaakita City Chamber of Commerce office to the facility in May 2023, and the opening of "AEON TOWN Takanosu Post Office" in January 2024, the second "+ Eco Post Office" in the Tohoku region.
