History

AEON Chatan Shopping Center opened on November 6, 1998, as part of AEON Ryukyu's expansion in Okinawa. The core store was originally named Jusco Chatan Store, reflecting the Jusco brand that AEON used for its general merchandise stores at the time. The shopping center was developed within the American Village area of Chatan, a popular commercial and entertainment district. On March 1, 2011, the core store was renamed AEON Chatan Store, along with four other Jusco stores in Okinawa (AEON Naha, AEON Haebaru, AEON Gushikawa, and AEON Nago), as part of AEON Group's nationwide rebranding of Jusco to AEON. In May 2011, the operating company changed its name from Ryukyu Jusco Co., Ltd. to AEON Ryukyu Co., Ltd. The shopping center celebrated its 20th anniversary on November 6, 2018. On April 1, 2020, free plastic bag distribution ended at all AEON directly operated stores nationwide, including AEON Chatan. On March 1, 2022, operating hours were changed at all five AEON stores operated by AEON Ryukyu, including AEON Chatan. Over the years, the tenant mix has evolved. For example, the Hash Ash store closed on January 22, 2021, and was replaced by Shoo La Rue on April 1, 2021. As of April 2022, the center housed approximately 65 specialty shops alongside the core AEON store.
