Overview
AEO MALL Ōdaka (イオンモール大高) is a shopping mall located in Minami-Ōdaka, Midori Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by AEON MALL Co., Ltd., the shopping-center development and management arm of the AEON Group. The facility opened on March 25, 2008 as "AEON Ōdaka Shopping Center" and was renamed "AEON MALL Ōdaka" on November 21, 2013, in line with AEON's unification of its large shopping-center names under the "AEON MALL" brand. It is commonly abbreviated as "Ōdaka AEON." The mall consists of a general merchandise store (GMS), AEON Ōdaka, and an enclosed specialty-store arcade. Both the AEON store and the specialty arcade occupy the first through third floors of the main building, and the specialty arcade is approximately 280 meters long, running north-south. The core store was known as JUSCO Ōdaka until 2011, when AEON unified its GMS store names to "AEON." At opening, the site covered about 80,000 m², with total floor area including the multi-level parking of about 160,000 m², commercial floor area of about 51,165 m², and roughly 190 stores. Following a major renovation that reopened on April 24, 2014, the number of specialty stores increased to about 210, and the food court was expanded to 1,100 seats. The mall is known for incorporating local character: the traditional craft of Arimatsu-Narumi shibori (tie-dyeing) from the surrounding area is displayed as permanent interior decoration. It was also the first JUSCO (now AEON) store to not distribute free plastic shopping bags from opening, in connection with Nagoya City's model project promoting paid plastic bags in Midori Ward from October 2007. The mall includes AEON Cinema Ōdaka, a 10-screen, 1,846-seat cinema operated by AEON Entertainment, which introduced Asia's first D-BOX motion seats and, in 2016, the first IMAX digital theater in the AEON Cinema chain. Access is primarily by public transportation. JR Central's Minami-Ōdaka Station on the Tōkaidō Main Line opened on March 14, 2009, and its second floor connects directly to the mall's specialty-store building first floor via a pedestrian deck. The mall is also served by Nagoya City Bus and Meitetsu Bus. Because the area is near major highway junctions and congestion is a concern, the mall encourages visitors to use public transit. Parking is paid, and in June 2023 the main building area switched to a gate-less, ticket-less parking fee system using camera-based license plate recognition.
History
AEO MALL Ōdaka opened on March 25, 2008 as "AEON Ōdaka Shopping Center" (イオン大高ショッピングセンター). It was developed by AEON Co., Ltd. on a portion of the Ōdaka-Minami specific land readjustment project area in Midori Ward, Nagoya, with construction carried out by Yamazaki Construction. At opening, the site area was approximately 80,000 m², total floor area including multi-level parking was approximately 160,000 m², commercial floor area was approximately 51,165 m², and the number of stores was about 190. The core store was JUSCO Ōdaka. Due to Nagoya City's model project promoting paid plastic shopping bags in Midori Ward from October 2007, it became the first JUSCO (now AEON) store not to distribute free plastic bags from the time of opening. On March 14, 2009, JR Central's Minami-Ōdaka Station opened on the Tōkaidō Main Line east of the facility, and the station's second floor was directly connected to the mall's specialty-store building first floor by a pedestrian deck. In March 2010, a cinema building was constructed, and on March 23, 2010, Warner Mycal Cinemas Ōdaka opened. On March 1, 2011, as part of AEON Group's unification of its general merchandise store names to "AEON," the core JUSCO Ōdaka store was renamed AEON Ōdaka. On July 1, 2013, Warner Mycal, the operator of Warner Mycal Cinemas, merged with AEON Cinemas to form AEON Entertainment, and the theater name was changed to "AEON Cinema." On November 21, 2013, the facility name was changed from "AEON Ōdaka Shopping Center" to "AEON MALL Ōdaka," following AEON's move from 2011 to unify the names of its large shopping centers under "AEON MALL." Also in November 2013, AEON Retail began entrusting the operation of its large shopping centers to AEON MALL, and management and operation of the facility transferred to AEON MALL simultaneously with the name change on November 21. On January 18, 2014, a flash mob was held to create a promotional CM for "Kansha Kanreki NHK Nagoya." The facility shares the same original design drawings as AEON MALL Kakamigahara. On April 24, 2014, the mall held a major renovation and reopened, with 77 new stores opening and the number of specialty stores increasing to 210. The food court was expanded to 1,100 seats, and a west multi-level parking structure and temporary parking lot were also built. On June 1, 2023, the parking system for the main building area was changed from the previous gate-type system to a gate-less, ticket-less parking fee system using camera-based license plate recognition. The west multi-level parking structure was not changed from the gate-type system, but with the change in the main building area system, the authentication for discount services based on purchase amount at the facility was changed to recognition via QR codes printed on parking discount tickets, the same as in the main building area. The mall has about 210 specialty stores with AEON Ōdaka as the core store. Major tenants include Joshin, Muji, Hands, Megasports (formerly Sports Authority), Uniqlo, and Miraiya Shoten. On October 2, 2014, the "Minami-Ōdaka Nihon Bunka Center" opened on the first floor. Among past tenants, Shabuna Ōdaka was found to have repeatedly served leftover shabu-shabu meat to other customers several to about ten times a day from late March to June 4, 2008, under the instruction of the store manager; it was inspected by the Midori Health Center of Nagoya City on June 25 and voluntarily suspended operations, and closed on June 26, 2008 after AEON issued a recommendation to leave. HMV AEON Ōdaka had operated since opening but closed on September 5, 2010; Tower Records, a competitor, opened in its former space on November 19, 2010. AEON Cinema Ōdaka is located on the first floor and is a cinema with 10 screens and 1,846 seats (including 26 wheelchair seats), operated by AEON Entertainment. It was the first cinema in Asia to introduce D-BOX. In 2016, Screen 10 was renovated and the first IMAX digital theater in the AEON Cinema chain was introduced. D-BOX was discontinued during the July 2024 renovation. It was also the last theater opened by Warner Mycal, the predecessor of AEON Entertainment, in the Tōkai region. Its history: opened March 23, 2010 as "Warner Mycal Cinemas Ōdaka" under Warner Mycal; on July 1, 2013, Warner Mycal and AEON Cinemas merged and management changed to AEON Entertainment, and the name was changed to "AEON Cinema Ōdaka"; in 2016, Screen 10 was renovated and an IMAX digital theater was introduced; on July 16, 2024, it reopened after renovation, with new armrest seats on both sides of the IMAX theater seats, removal of D-BOX from Screen 8, and renovation of the theater lobby and concession stand.
