Overview

Advanced Labelling Systems Ltd (ALS) is a UK-based manufacturer of industrial labelling machines, coding and marking equipment, and automated product handling systems. Founded in 1997 through a management buy-out of Avery Dennison's UK labelling machinery division, the company designs, builds, and supports complete labelling solutions for production lines across the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, logistics, and manufacturing industries. ALS is headquartered in Thame, Oxfordshire, where all design and build work is carried out at its workshops. ALS offers one of the broadest product ranges in the UK labelling sector, including front and back labellers, wrap-around labellers, front-of-pack labellers, pre-printed label applicators, over-printers/coders, and RFID systems. Uniquely, the company also manufactures self-adhesive labels and is a specialist supplier of EAS and RFID labels and tags. Its label production facility has been operational for nearly 30 years, and its contract labelling bureau handles everything from large-scale marketing campaigns to urgent correctional work. The company serves a wide range of sectors, from food and beverage through to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, logistics, and beyond. ALS is the official UK partner of Novexx Solutions GmbH, EIDOS Srl, and Etipack SpA. In 2023, ALS sold a majority stake to the Possehl Group, joining its Possehl Identification Solutions (PID) division, a family of eleven specialised companies. ALS remains a UK-based manufacturer with a strong focus on after-sales support, offering a comprehensive 2-year on-site warranty covering parts, travel, and labour.

History

Advanced Labelling Systems (ALS) was established in 1997 when Noel Donaldson led a management buy-out of Avery Dennison's UK labelling machinery division. The entire team relocated from Wooburn Green in Buckinghamshire to a new facility in Thame, Oxfordshire, bringing with them decades of labelling expertise. For the next 25 years, ALS operated as an independent, family-run business under Noel's son, Phil, and a team headed by Ian Turner. The company grew on the principles of employing good people, looking after customers, and standing behind its products. From the outset, ALS offered a comprehensive 2-year on-site warranty covering parts, travel, and labour — a unique proposition in the UK labelling market at the time. Over the years, ALS expanded its capabilities beyond equipment supply to include in-house label production and a contract labelling bureau. Its label production facility has been operational for nearly 30 years. The company also became the official UK partner of Novexx Solutions GmbH, EIDOS Srl, and Etipack SpA. In 2023, ALS sold a majority stake to the Possehl Group, a move that brought the company into the Possehl Identification Solutions (PID) division, a family of eleven specialised companies. This partnership was intended to help ALS grow while maintaining its UK manufacturing base and commitment to after-sales support.
