Overview
Adtranz, formally ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation, was a major European railway equipment company established in 1996 through the combination of the rail transportation businesses of ABB and Daimler-Benz. Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, it supplied locomotives, multiple-unit trains, urban rail vehicles, railway signalling and related electrical and control systems. Its customers included national railway companies, urban transit authorities and other rail operators. Adtranz inherited substantial engineering and manufacturing capabilities from both parent groups and operated across several important railway markets. Strong competition, high capital requirements and consolidation in the railway equipment industry made it difficult for the company to remain independent. Bombardier acquired Adtranz in 2001 and integrated its operations into Bombardier Transportation. The Adtranz name subsequently disappeared as an independent brand, while parts of its products, facilities, technology and project portfolio continued under Bombardier and, through later industry consolidation, other railway manufacturers.
History
Adtranz originated from the railway transportation businesses of ABB and Daimler-Benz. In 1996, the two groups combined these activities to create ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation, marketed under the Adtranz name. Based in Berlin, the company supplied locomotives, multiple-unit trains, urban rail vehicles, railway signalling and electrification-related systems. By bringing together the manufacturing sites, engineering capabilities and customer relationships of both parent companies, Adtranz became one of the significant suppliers in the European rail equipment market. Its activities covered both mainline railways and urban transport projects such as metros, light rail and trams. As the rail equipment industry entered a period of international consolidation, Adtranz faced intense competition and the operational complexity associated with integrating a large cross-border business. Bombardier acquired Adtranz in 2001 and incorporated its activities into Bombardier Transportation. The Adtranz name subsequently ceased to operate as an independent brand, although parts of its products, facilities, technical expertise and customer projects continued within Bombardier. Bombardier Transportation was later incorporated into Alstom, bringing some Adtranz-derived activities and assets into another corporate group.

Products and positioning
Locomotives
Adtranz supplied locomotives, including electric locomotives, for mainline passenger and freight railway operators. These products reflected its capabilities in traction electrics, rolling-stock engineering and rail-system integration.
Multiple-unit trains
Multiple-unit and electric multiple-unit trains formed an important part of Adtranz's rolling-stock portfolio for intercity, regional and commuter services. Such trains were developed in conjunction with infrastructure, signalling and operator requirements.
Trams and light rail vehicles
Adtranz supplied trams and light rail vehicles for urban public transport systems, including tramways and light-rail projects. These activities were later integrated into Bombardier Transportation.
Railway signalling and control systems
Beyond rolling stock, Adtranz supplied railway signalling, train control and related systems integration, allowing it to participate in projects covering both vehicles and rail infrastructure.
