Overview

ADNOC Distribution is the downstream retail and distribution arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Established by royal decree in 1973, it became the UAE’s first state-owned enterprise focused on marketing and distributing fuel products to consumers and commercial customers. Its core business is the operation of service stations and the sale of gasoline, diesel and other energy products, supported by convenience retail, vehicle care, car washing, oil changes, vehicle inspection, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas and aviation-fueling activities. The company has developed its service stations into broader mobility and retail destinations. Its ADNOC Oasis convenience-store network sells food, beverages and everyday travel items, while station properties may include restaurants, banks, insurance providers and other third-party tenants. The company manages and leases more than 1,000 retail properties within its network, giving it a non-fuel revenue stream alongside fuel sales. Digital services include app-based refueling, mobile ordering and collection from Oasis stores, rewards, LPG ordering and technology-enabled payment and checkout experiences. ADNOC Distribution’s UAE footprint expanded materially through acquisitions and transfers of service stations from Emarat and ENOC. It began international expansion in Saudi Arabia in 2018 and later entered Egypt through the acquisition of a 50% interest in TotalEnergies’ Egyptian network. The company has subsequently introduced ADNOC-branded stations in Egypt and continued developing its regional lubricants and fuel businesses. As of 2024, it operated more than 800 service stations across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, according to the referenced company and encyclopedia material. The company became publicly traded on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange on 13 December 2017 under the symbol ADNOCDIST. ADNOC remains its parent and largest shareholder. Since listing, ADNOC Distribution has combined network growth with initiatives in electric-vehicle charging, compressed natural gas, green hydrogen, lower-carbon lubricants, solar power and digital automation. Its E2GO joint venture with TAQA Group focuses on UAE electric-vehicle infrastructure, while its H2GO project with Masdar has been used to test high-speed green-hydrogen refueling. ADNOC Distribution remains principally a UAE mobility and fuel-retailing brand, but its geographic scope now includes Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Its positioning is based on national-scale infrastructure, access to ADNOC’s energy supply system, a dense station network and an increasingly diversified offer spanning fuel, convenience retail, vehicle services, property leasing and alternative-mobility solutions.

History

ADNOC Distribution was created by royal decree in 1973 as the UAE’s first state-owned enterprise dedicated to marketing and distributing fuel products. Its initial role was to connect ADNOC’s petroleum supply system with motorists, businesses and other end users through fuel stations and related distribution channels. The business later expanded beyond fuel sales into vehicle maintenance, convenience retail, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas, aviation fueling and station-property management. A significant early industrial development came in 1979, when the company established a lubricant blending and packaging facility at Sas Al Nakhl in Abu Dhabi. This supported the development of a lubricants business alongside the company’s retail fuel operations. As the UAE’s road network, population and vehicle fleet grew, ADNOC Distribution broadened its station proposition through car washing, oil changes, vehicle inspections and other vehicle-care services. Its ADNOC Oasis format added convenience shopping to selected stations. The company expanded its UAE network through acquisitions and operational transfers. In 2013 it acquired 75 service stations from Emarat in the Northern Emirates. In 2014 it took over 25 stations in Sharjah that had previously been operated by Emirates National Oil Company. These transactions strengthened the company’s position beyond Abu Dhabi and contributed to the development of a more national UAE retail footprint. On 13 December 2017, ADNOC Distribution became a listed company on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange under the symbol ADNOCDIST. The public offering represented 10% of the company’s share capital. Listing gave the business an independent capital-market profile while ADNOC remained its parent and largest shareholder. International expansion began with Saudi Arabia. In December 2018, ADNOC Distribution opened its first Saudi station on the Riyadh–Dammam highway, followed by a second station in Hofuf. In 2020, it agreed to acquire 15 more Saudi stations. That year it also entered Egypt by acquiring a 50% stake in TotalEnergies’ Egyptian network, which included more than 240 service stations and associated lubricant-change, car-wash, wholesale and aviation-fuel operations. Nine ADNOC-branded stations were subsequently launched in Egypt in 2023. Since the early 2020s, the company has emphasized diversification and transition-related services. In 2022 it launched a dedicated compressed-natural-gas station in Abu Dhabi, introduced the Voyager Green Series of plant-based lubricants and formed E2GO with TAQA Group to develop UAE electric-vehicle infrastructure. In 2023 it announced a roadmap targeting a 25% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions intensity by 2030, supported by rooftop solar installations and sustainability-linked financing. In partnership with Masdar, it also introduced H2GO, a high-speed green-hydrogen refueling station intended to test hydrogen-powered vehicles. Digitalization has become another development theme. ADNOC Distribution has promoted app-based Fill & Go refueling, Click & Collect ordering from Oasis stores, automated checkout using computer vision, and next-generation car-wash tunnels using recycled water. It has also explored robotic refueling and autonomous EV charging. In 2024, the company stated that numerous AI projects were under development to improve operating efficiency and customer services. Its current identity therefore combines conventional fuel retail with convenience, vehicle care, property leasing and emerging mobility infrastructure across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
