Overview
ADELI (originally Association pour le DEveloppement de la Logique Informatique) is a French non-profit association created in 1978 under the French law of 1901. Its original purpose was to promote and facilitate the use of the formalised information-processing methodologies developed by Jean-Dominique Warnier, known as "Logique informatique", which aimed to rationalise programming, information-system design and maintenance. Over the decades ADELI broadened its scope to cover all aspects of information systems, organisations and digital technologies, including software engineering, quality, project management, security and the social impact of digital technology. The association is run entirely by volunteers and describes itself as "Explorateurs des espaces numériques" (Explorers of digital spaces). It organises conferences, debates, working groups and an annual science-fiction short-story competition, and it publishes free-access articles, conference videos, books and a quarterly digital newsletter, La Lettre d'ADELI. Its statutes, published in the Journal Officiel, define its mission as facilitating the sharing and exchange of information between users and professionals of the digital economy, information systems and ICT through good practices, methods, standards and tools. ADELI is headquartered in France and operates primarily in the French-speaking professional community. It is not a commercial company but a membership-based association; its activities are financed by membership fees and volunteer contributions. The association has been active for more than four decades and continues to hold general assemblies, conferences and thematic events on topics such as artificial intelligence, cloud security, data leaks and frugal computing.
History
ADELI was founded in 1978 under the name "Association pour le DEveloppement de la Logique Informatique". Its creation was driven by the desire to promote the "Logique informatique" method developed by Jean-Dominique Warnier (1920–1990), a French author who advocated a rational approach to programming and data organisation. In the late 1970s, data processing was entering industrial take-off, and programmers struggled with limited hardware and software resources. Warnier's method offered a structured way to design programs and information systems, and ADELI was created to facilitate and promote its use. The founding assembly took place in March 1978 and was presided over by Jacques Bérigaud, then director of the SCAT at Cii-Honeywell-Bull. He warned the new association against two pitfalls: becoming a closed club of intellectuals or turning into a service company. ADELI remained a volunteer-based association, with early leaders such as François Tête (president 1982–1987), Paul Théron (1987–1991), Gilbert Abouhair (1992–1996) and Geneviève Coullault (1997–1999). Alain Coulon served as secretary-treasurer from 1978 to 2011, providing continuity. Over time, ADELI progressively extended its themes from the original Logique informatique to all aspects of information systems, organisations and digital technologies. It embraced software engineering, quality methods, project management, security and the societal impact of ICT. The association also became a publisher: it distributes numerous free articles on its website, videos of conferences, books and a quarterly digital newsletter, La Lettre d'ADELI. It organises an annual science-fiction short-story competition, with themes such as "2050… Quel monde pour demain?" and "Le bébé parfait". In the 2010s and 2020s, ADELI continued to hold general assemblies and conferences on current topics including cloud security, artificial intelligence, zero-trust cybersecurity, data leaks and frugal computing. The association remains active, run by volunteers, and describes itself as "Explorateurs des espaces numériques". Its website, espaces-numeriques.org, serves as its main platform for publications and event announcements.
