Adam Air

Adam Air was an Indonesian low-cost airline that began operations in 2002 and was headquartered in Jakarta. It competed in Indonesia’s domestic aviation market with relatively low-fare passenger services and operated flights to a number of destinations within the country. The crash of Adam Air Flight 574 in 2007, which killed everyone on board, was followed by extensive scrutiny of the airline’s safety management, regulatory oversight, and financial condition. The Indonesian government revoked the airline’s operating authorization in 2008, after which Adam Air ceased operations. Since the company is defunct, the brand is now chiefly discussed in connection with Indonesia’s aviation-safety and regulatory history.

Adam Air was established in 2002 and became one of the participants in Indonesia’s low-cost aviation market during the 2000s. Based primarily in Jakarta, it provided scheduled passenger services within Indonesia. Its expansion took place during a period when Indonesia’s aviation market was opening further and low-cost carriers were growing, allowing the airline to attract attention with comparatively low fares. In December 2007, Adam Air Flight 574 disappeared while traveling from Surabaya to Manado and was later confirmed to have crashed in waters near the Makassar Strait, killing all 102 people on board. The crash and its aftermath brought intense scrutiny to the company’s flight safety, maintenance, training, and regulatory conditions. In 2008, the Indonesian government imposed measures that culminated in the revocation of Adam Air’s operating authorization. The airline subsequently ceased flight operations and left the commercial aviation market. It no longer has an active route network, fleet, or operating business.
