Overview

Acta Neophilologica is a Slovenian scholarly journal published once a year since 1968. It is the journal of Slovenian scholars of English, German and Romance studies as well as literary historians. The journal is issued by the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Arts, and its editor-in-chief is Igor Maver. It was conceived and for more than three decades edited by Janez Stanonik, who led it from its foundation until 1999/2000; after his retirement he was succeeded by Mirko Jurak, who had previously been a member of the editorial board. The journal publishes articles in foreign languages, predominantly English (about 55% of articles), followed by German (20%), Spanish (11%), French (7%), Italian (6%) and, in a very small number, Swedish (1%, i.e. three articles). Since 1973, Slovenian summaries of the articles have been added at the end of each issue. Since 2001, abstracts have also been added to the articles. The journal is primarily oriented toward articles on American and English literature, including articles on other literatures written in English, as well as articles on German literature and literature written in Romance languages. The editorial board also welcomes articles from related fields: intercultural studies, ethnic studies, comparative literature, linguistics, etc. Many articles are devoted to Slovenian emigrant authors. In addition to topics related to Slovenian emigrant literature, the journal pays special attention to Slovenian literary and cultural contacts, especially with American, English, Australian, German, French and Italian literature. Some articles deal with the translation of foreign works into Slovenian and vice versa. From 1973 onward, about 84% of articles have been related to literature, 10% to language, and 6% to various topics: ethnography, gematria, art history and autobiographical memoir articles. Authors publishing in Acta Neophilologica include both Slovenian (77%) and foreign (23%) surnames.
