Overview

ACI Worldwide is a payments technology company whose software and services support electronic transactions for banks, financial institutions, merchants, billers, acquirers, issuers, and other payment service providers. Its technology is used across card payments, account-to-account transfers, real-time payments, automated clearing house transactions, wire transfers, digital commerce, merchant acquiring, electronic bill payment, and payment fraud management. The company originated in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1975 as Applied Communications Inc. Its early work involved communications software for Tandem Computers' NonStop systems. ACI subsequently developed systems for automated teller machines and banking-system front ends, leading to the introduction of BASE24 in 1982. BASE24 became a central part of the company's identity and expanded from ATM processing to point-of-sale, branch, card, clearing, settlement, and related transaction functions. During the 1990s and 2000s, the business broadened beyond ATM and card switching into wholesale banking payments, corporate cash management, merchant services, electronic bill payment, digital commerce, and fraud detection. Its expansion was supported by acquisitions including IntraNet, P&H Solutions, Electronic Payment Systems, Euronet Essentis, S1 Corporation, Online Resources, Official Payments, Retail Decisions, PAY.ON, and other businesses. The company also consolidated several operations under the ACI Worldwide name. ACI was publicly traded from 1995, initially through Transaction Systems Architects, and adopted the ACI Worldwide name for its public-company identity in 2007. In 2019 it agreed to acquire Speedpay, Western Union's U.S. bill-payment business, for $750 million, substantially strengthening its position in consumer and utility bill payment. In 2022, Advent International and investment partners completed a take-private transaction, after which ACI ceased to be a Nasdaq-listed company. Today, ACI positions itself as an enterprise payments infrastructure provider. Its offerings combine licensed software, cloud deployment, managed services, payment processing, payment orchestration, real-time-payment connectivity, biller services, and fraud and risk controls. The company reports serving customers in 94 countries and processing billions of transactions daily, representing trillions of U.S. dollars in aggregate transaction value. ACI has maintained technology and ecosystem relationships involving organizations such as AWS, Google, Red Hat, IBM, Mastercard, and Visa.

History

ACI Worldwide began on September 1, 1975, in Omaha, Nebraska, as Applied Communications Inc. The founders were James Cody, Dave Willadsen, and Dennis Gates. The company initially developed communications software for Tandem Computers' NonStop systems, with early commercial relationships supported by Chuck Hackett, Charly Foglesong, and Mike May. Work on automated teller machines and front ends for core banking systems moved the company toward transaction processing. In 1982, ACI introduced BASE24, a transaction-processing product whose name referred to continuous, around-the-clock operation. BASE24 initially supported ATM activity but was later extended to point-of-sale terminals, bank branches, card transactions, clearing, settlement, and fraud-related functions. The software was adapted for hardware platforms from several major computing suppliers, helping ACI serve financial institutions with heterogeneous technology environments. The company expanded during the 1990s into wholesale banking payments, including automated clearing house and wire-transfer functions. Its acquisition of IntraNet in 1998 added electronic-payment software and the Money Transfer System product. ACI's corporate history also included periods of ownership or influence involving US West and Tandem before the business became publicly traded. ACI entered public markets in 1995 under the Transaction Systems Architects name. Through acquisitions and internal restructuring, it brought together ACI, Insession, IntraNet, and other operations. The company acquired or added businesses covering corporate cash management, electronic payments, merchant management, card issuing, retail payments, digital commerce, fraud prevention, and bill payment. Important transactions included P&H Solutions and Electronic Payment Systems in 2006; Stratasoft and Visual WEB Solutions in 2007; Euronet Essentis in 2009; ISD Corporation, S1 Corporation, North Data Uruguay, and Distra in 2011–2012; Online Resources, Official Payments, and PTESA in 2013; Retail Decisions in 2014; PAY.ON in 2015; and Walletron in 2019. In July 2007, Transaction Systems Architects adopted ACI Worldwide as its public-company name and continued trading on Nasdaq under ACIW. The business increasingly moved from installed transaction software toward integrated platforms, hosted payment gateways, cloud services, and managed operations. Its customer base broadened to include banks, processors, merchants, billers, acquirers, issuers, and payment networks. The 2019 acquisition of Speedpay from Western Union for $750 million significantly expanded ACI's U.S. electronic bill-payment activities. In January 2022, Advent International and other investors completed a take-private transaction for ACI Worldwide. The company consequently ceased to be a publicly traded Nasdaq issuer and continued as a private payments technology business. Its current platform strategy centers on connecting payment methods, payment networks, financial institutions, merchants, and billers across card, account-to-account, real-time, digital, and recurring-payment channels.
