Overview
ACeS, formally associated with PT Asia Cellular Satellite, was an Indonesian satellite telecommunications company headquartered in Jakarta. It developed a regional mobile-satellite service intended to extend telephone connectivity beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial cellular networks. The company targeted rural communities and industries such as forestry, mining, and maritime transport, where building or maintaining terrestrial towers could be difficult or uneconomic. The network was designed with capacity for as many as two million subscribers, but adoption was much slower than planned. After five years of operation, the service reportedly had fewer than 20,000 subscribers. The business struggled to attract sufficient customers and became widely regarded as a commercial failure. A second satellite, Garuda-2, was planned but never launched. ACeS was established as a regional satellite telecommunications venture based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Its formal corporate association was PT Asia Cellular Satellite.
