Overview
Abu Garcia is a Swedish fishing-tackle brand whose industrial roots go back to AB Urfabriken, established in 1921 in Svängsta, Blekinge, near the Mörrum River. The business was founded by Carl August Borgström and initially manufactured precision products including watches, telephone timers, and taximeters. Its original markets became less attractive during the Second World War, while the company’s connection with fishing and its manufacturing capabilities created an opportunity to move into angling equipment. A decisive change came under Borgström’s son, Göte Borgström, who redirected the company toward fishing reels. That transition established the business’s long-term identity and laid the foundation for Abu Garcia’s reputation for carefully engineered reel mechanisms. The brand became particularly associated with baitcasting reels, where compact mechanical construction, spool control, casting performance, and durability are important to anglers. The Ambassadeur family became the best-known expression of this heritage and remains closely associated with the brand’s Swedish manufacturing tradition. Abu Garcia’s international development was supported by the American Garcia Corporation, which imported and marketed ABU Svängsta reels in the United States from the 1950s. This relationship gave the Swedish products access to a major outdoor-sports market and helped turn the brand from a regional manufacturer into an internationally recognized tackle name. In 1980, ABU Svängsta acquired the New Jersey-based Garcia Tackle Company and adopted the Abu Garcia name. The corporate history subsequently became linked with other major tackle businesses and ownership groups, including Outdoor Technologies Group, Pure Fishing, Jarden Corporation, Newell Rubbermaid, and Sycamore Partners. The brand’s product portfolio expanded beyond its historic reel business. In addition to Ambassadeur baitcasting reels, Abu Garcia markets modern reel families such as Revo, along with spinning reels, fishing rods, line-related products, terminal tackle, and other equipment designed for freshwater and saltwater applications. Product configurations vary by fishing technique, target species, casting method, and regional market. The brand serves recreational anglers as well as users involved in competitive and performance-oriented fishing. Abu Garcia is now part of Pure Fishing, a privately held international fishing-equipment group. It operates alongside other tackle brands within that portfolio while retaining a distinct identity centered on reel engineering, Swedish heritage, mechanical design, and angling specialization. The brand is sold across international markets through direct channels, specialist tackle retailers, distributors, and sporting-goods outlets. Some products carry a Swedish Royal Warrant seal identifying the brand as a supplier to the Swedish royal court, a distinction associated with quality and service rather than ownership. Abu Garcia remains active as a global fishing-equipment brand, with reels continuing to serve as its principal heritage and recognition driver.
History
Abu Garcia developed from AB Urfabriken, a manufacturing company founded by Carl August Borgström in 1921 at Svängsta in southern Sweden. The factory was located near the Mörrum River, an area with a strong connection to fishing. The original business produced precision goods rather than fishing tackle, including watches, telephone timers, and taximeters. This early manufacturing background later proved useful because fishing reels demanded accurate, durable, and repeatable mechanical construction. During the Second World War, demand for some of the company’s original products declined. Göte Borgström, the founder’s son and a fishing enthusiast, directed the company toward fishing reels. This change became the central turning point in the company’s history. Instead of remaining a general precision manufacturer, the business increasingly concentrated on equipment for anglers and developed expertise in reel mechanisms. The Ambassadeur line became an important symbol of that transition and of the company’s reputation for Swedish engineering. The brand gained an international foothold through the Garcia Corporation in the United States. From the 1950s, Garcia imported and marketed reels produced by ABU Svängsta, making the Swedish products more visible in the large American outdoor-sports market. Garcia had already been involved in the distribution of fishing tackle, and its relationship with ABU helped connect Swedish manufacturing with international sales and marketing. The companies’ relationship evolved through several corporate arrangements. A short-lived Garcia Tackle Company partnership involving ABU Svängsta and Mitchell S.A. appeared around 1979–1980. In 1980, ABU Svängsta acquired the New Jersey-based Garcia Tackle Company and changed its name to Abu Garcia. Mitchell and Abu Garcia later became associated again through the Pure Fishing corporate structure, despite following separate paths at earlier stages. In 1995, Abu Garcia became part of Outdoor Technologies Group. That group changed its name to Pure Fishing in 2000 and later acquired Mitchell. Pure Fishing was acquired by Jarden Corporation in April 2007. After Newell Rubbermaid acquired Jarden in December 2015, Newell sold Pure Fishing to Sycamore Partners in November 2018. These transactions changed the brand’s ownership without eliminating Abu Garcia’s distinct market identity. Commercially, Abu Garcia expanded from its traditional reel base into a broader fishing-tackle portfolio. The company continues to be identified with baitcasting reels, especially the Ambassadeur family, while the Revo family represents a more modern range of reel designs. The portfolio also includes spinning reels, rods, and related fishing equipment for different fishing techniques and environments. Products are distributed internationally through fishing-tackle specialists, sporting-goods retailers, distributors, and online channels. The brand’s Swedish origin remains a visible part of its heritage. A number of Abu Garcia products display a Swedish Royal Warrant seal bearing the designation associated with suppliers to the Swedish royal court. The warrant is a recognition of service and quality, not an indication that the brand is owned by the Swedish royal family. Abu Garcia also has a collector following, particularly for historic reels and other equipment connected with its earlier manufacturing eras. Today Abu Garcia operates as part of Pure Fishing’s privately held brand portfolio. Its principal competitive territory is fishing tackle, with reel design and angler-oriented performance at the center of its identity. The brand’s history combines precision manufacturing, product specialization, American distribution, and successive corporate consolidation, while its public-facing proposition remains focused on fishing equipment rather than its former watch, timer, or taximeter businesses.

Products and positioning
An internationally marketed fishing-equipment brand positioned around reel engineering, durability, mechanical performance, Swedish heritage, and equipment for recreational and performance-focused anglers.
AmbassadeurBaitcasting reels
Ambassadeur is Abu Garcia’s signature heritage reel family. The line is associated with round-profile baitcasting reels and the company’s historical reputation for precise mechanical construction. Ambassadeur models are used by anglers who value spool control, direct mechanical feel, serviceability, and durability. The family is also important to collectors because historic ABU reels represent the company’s Swedish manufacturing era and its transition from general precision products into specialized fishing tackle.
RevoFishing reels
Revo is a modern Abu Garcia reel family covering baitcasting and other reel formats. Its models are designed for different fishing techniques and are generally positioned around reduced weight, casting control, handling, and application-specific configurations. The family extends Abu Garcia’s reel expertise into contemporary designs while preserving the brand’s focus on mechanical performance and angler control.
Abu Garcia spinning reelsSpinning reels
Abu Garcia’s spinning reels broaden the brand beyond its best-known baitcasting heritage. They are intended for fishing situations in which open-spool operation, ease of casting, and versatility are important. Models are offered for different user levels and applications, allowing the brand to serve anglers who prefer spinning tackle for freshwater, inshore, or general-purpose fishing.
Abu Garcia fishing rodsFishing rods
Abu Garcia fishing rods are designed to pair with the brand’s reels and cover a range of techniques, lure weights, target species, and fishing environments. Rod families support both baitcasting and spinning setups and help position Abu Garcia as a complete tackle brand rather than a reel-only manufacturer. Their role is to provide matched equipment for anglers building an Abu Garcia setup across multiple product categories.
Abu Garcia fishing tackle and accessoriesFishing equipment and accessories
The wider Abu Garcia range includes fishing-related equipment and accessories that complement reels and rods. Depending on market, this may include line-related products, terminal tackle, and other items used in freshwater, saltwater, recreational, and performance-oriented fishing. These products support the brand’s broader presence in specialist tackle retail.
