Overview

ABS Group is a Swedish industrial brand specializing in pumps and equipment for water supply, wastewater and water treatment. Its product range includes sewage pumps, industrial pumps, drainage pumps, domestic pumps, sewage pumping stations, mixers, aeration systems, turbo compressors and control systems. The brand traces its roots to several Swedish engineering companies, the oldest being Jönköpings Mekaniska Werkstad (JMW), founded in 1860. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions over more than a century, the modern ABS Group emerged, becoming one of Europe's larger pump manufacturers. In 2011 the ABS trademark and assets were acquired by the Swiss industrial company Sulzer, under which the brand continues to operate. ABS products are used in municipal water utilities, wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, private homes and offices, particularly in Russia and other markets. The company opened a representative office in Russia in 2008, and its Russian operations were later integrated into Sulzer's local subsidiary. The official website absgroup.com is currently listed for sale, indicating that the brand's online presence has changed since the Sulzer acquisition.

History

The history of ABS Group is a story of mergers and acquisitions among Swedish pump manufacturers. The oldest constituent company, Jönköpings Mekaniska Werkstad (JMW), was founded in 1860. In 1918, the trading company Ekman & Co founded AB Pumpindustri to create a pump equipment industry, and in the same year AB Maskinfabriken Göta, later known as Vadstena Pumpar AB, was established. In 1959, ABS Pumpen was founded in Scheiderhohe, Germany, producing submersible pumps and mixers for wastewater systems. In 1966, the Swedish firm Wilh. Sonesson AB of Malmö acquired Pumpindustri and later renamed it Sonesson Pumpindustri AB, expanding its product range with the Gothia Piston and SIHI (Germany) trademarks. In 1979, the company was renamed Scanpump AB, a brand that had appeared on the pump market in 1967 for export sales. Three years later, Scanpump AB acquired JMW, a major manufacturer of large pumps for the pulp and paper industry, water treatment plants and seawater applications. In 1985, Scanpump AB acquired Vadstena Pumpar, specializing in construction and operation pumps, and a year later acquired Pumpex, which produced and sold submersible pumps under its own trademark, with a factory in Nordmaling and sales office in Stockholm. In 1989, Scanpump AB bought the ABS company from Scheiderhohe, which made submersible pumps for wastewater, submersible mixers for clean and wastewater, and pumps for the pulp and paper industry. As a result of these mergers and acquisitions over more than a hundred years, Scanpump became the fifth-largest pump manufacturer in Europe. In 1990, the French firm Lefi from Rosny-sous-Bois, producing process pumps mainly for the chemical industry, joined the group. Also in 1990, the company changed its name to ABS Scanpump AB. Three years later it was split into three divisions: Cardo Pump AB (parent company), ABS Pump Production AB (production distribution) and ABS Pump AB (sales). In 1994, Volvo sold all shares of Investment AB Cardo to Incentive. In 1995, Cardo Pump acquired 100% of the Swedish company SCABA AB, which produced wastewater treatment mixers for municipal organizations and the pulp and paper industry. ABS Pumps International AB was established as a sales company to increase exports in markets without commercial representation. During the 1990s, several such companies were established in Europe, North and South America and Asia. In 1997, under ABS management, the German and American divisions of Frings, a manufacturer of submersible aerators, were acquired. In the 2000s, in 2001, Swedmeter AB, specializing in industrial automation (instrumentation and control), and the Finnish company Nopon Oy, supplying aeration equipment, submersible mixer-aerators, disc diffuser systems and high-speed turbo compressors for oxygen enrichment in biological wastewater treatment, were acquired. In 2004-2005, ABS underwent radical changes. Core wastewater products and subsidiary products were presented for the first time under a single trademark, ABS, with the slogan 'We know how water work'. In January 2005, ABS established a broad-profile main subsidiary, ABS Scanpump AB, for the sale of pulp and paper equipment, returning to the well-established Scanpump brand. The Swedish manufacturing facility in Vadstena was modernized in 2004-2005 and began operating with modern technical equipment. Later, the Swedish factory in Mölndal was also placed under its management. In 2009, a project was started to produce new energy-saving products grouped in the ABS Effex line. In 2011, the assets of the ABS trademark were acquired by the Swiss company Sulzer. In late 2008, ABS Group opened a representative office in St. Petersburg, ZAO ABS Rus, which, following Sulzer's acquisition in 2013, became part of ZAO Sulzer Pumps (St. Petersburg).
