Overview
Abrams Books, formerly Harry N. Abrams, Inc., is an American publishing house focused on visually distinctive books and related paper products. Founded in 1949 by Harry N. Abrams, it was established as the first company in the United States devoted specifically to the creation and distribution of art books. The company helped develop the American market for high-quality illustrated publishing at a time when art books were often imported or produced as limited specialist editions. Abrams has since expanded well beyond its original art-book identity. Its adult publishing program includes art, photography, fashion, architecture, interior design, food, nature, science, popular culture, biography, memoir, history, current affairs, and narrative nonfiction. The company is also active in children's publishing, from board and novelty books for very young readers to picture books, illustrated nonfiction, middle-grade fiction, young-adult novels, graphic novels, and educationally oriented titles. Its publishing model places particular emphasis on the relationship between editorial content, illustration, design, photography, and physical production. The company operates through a portfolio of imprints and divisions. Abrams Books is the core illustrated-book list. Abrams Appleseed serves children up to approximately age five with board, novelty, and picture books. Abrams Books for Young Readers publishes picture books and illustrated nonfiction for preschool and middle-grade audiences. Amulet Books and Amulet Paperbacks publish middle-grade and young-adult fiction, graphic novels, and nonfiction. Abrams ComicArts focuses on graphic novels, comics history, creator monographs, animation, cartoon art, and licensed or translated comics. Abrams Image publishes books about music, humor, fashion, style, and popular culture, while Abrams Press covers narrative nonfiction and books concerning arts, culture, food, design, history, science, technology, memoir, and biography. Abrams Noterie develops gift and stationery products with authors, artists, and brands. Abrams also acts as a distributor and publishing partner for selected cultural institutions and independent houses. Its distribution relationships have included the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate, Vendome Press in North America, Booth-Clibborn Editions, SelfMadeHero, MoMA Children's Books, and 5 Continents. The company has reported publishing and distributing approximately 250 new titles annually and maintaining more than 3,000 titles in print, although these operating figures are subject to change. Ownership has changed several times. Times Mirror Company acquired Abrams in 1966, and Harry Abrams retired in 1977. La Martinière Groupe acquired the company in 1997; La Martinière subsequently became part of Média-Participations in 2018. Abrams expanded through acquisitions including The Overlook Press in 2018, Cameron + Company in 2020, and Taunton Press in 2024. These transactions broadened its editorial capabilities and strengthened its presence in illustrated, lifestyle, craft, and specialist publishing. Abrams is led by president and chief executive officer Mary McAveney and remains an active subsidiary within the Média-Participations publishing group.
History
Abrams Books was founded in 1949 by Harry N. Abrams. From its beginning, the company concentrated on art books, helping establish a specialized American business for producing and distributing heavily illustrated books about art and visual culture. Its early identity was closely associated with high-quality reproduction, substantial formats, and collaborations with museums, artists, designers, and other cultural institutions. Times Mirror Company acquired Abrams in 1966. Harry Abrams later retired in 1977, while the business continued operating as a major art-book publisher. Paul Gottlieb served as publisher for many years and remained an important figure in the company's editorial history until January 2001. During the late twentieth century, Abrams broadened its list from traditional art monographs into photography, design, fashion, architecture, food, performing arts, popular culture, and other illustrated subjects. La Martinière Groupe acquired Abrams in 1997. Under that ownership, the company developed a wider trade-publishing structure and added new areas of publishing. Stewart, Tabori & Chang, a publisher known for cookbooks and craft books, was purchased by Abrams in the late 1990s. Its previously published titles were later consolidated under other Abrams imprints as part of a broader unification strategy, accompanied by a corporate identity update. The company continued diversifying during the 2000s and 2010s. Abrams Image was launched in 2006 for books about music, humor, fashion, style, and popular culture. Abrams ComicArts followed in 2009 under the editorial direction of Charles Kochman, with a program centered on graphic novels, comics creators, comics history, animation, cartoon art, and related visual culture. Abrams Appleseed was founded in 2012 to publish board books, novelty books, and picture books for young children. The Amulet and Abrams Books for Young Readers programs helped establish the company as a significant publisher for middle-grade, young-adult, picture-book, and illustrated nonfiction audiences. Abrams' portfolio has included widely recognized works such as The Art of Walt Disney, Earth from Above, The Diary of Frida Kahlo, The Wes Anderson Collection, Rosie Revere, Engineer, El Deafo, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The company has also developed gift and stationery publishing through Abrams Noterie and narrative nonfiction through Abrams Press. Alongside its own imprints, Abrams has distributed books for museums, cultural organizations, and independent publishers in North America. In 2018, Abrams acquired The Overlook Press. The same year, La Martinière Groupe was acquired by Média-Participations, placing Abrams within that larger French media and publishing group. Abrams acquired Cameron + Company in 2020 and Taunton Press from Active Interest Media in May 2024. In 2024, Abrams ComicArts became a full division and broadened its program to include licensed manga and other international comics. Abrams also launched Kana, a manga and French-comics imprint aimed at more emotionally mature subjects and genres not generally associated with children's publishing. The company remains active as a multi-imprint publisher led by president and CEO Mary McAveney.
