Overview
Abakanvagonmash (Russian: Абаканвагонмаш), now operating as RM Rail Abakanvagonmash, is a Soviet-era and Russian industrial enterprise based in Abakan, Republic of Khakassia. Founded in 1970 as a railcar-building complex, it became the only producer of large-tonnage containers in the Russian Federation. The plant manufactures universal and specialized containers from 10 to 40 feet, including open-top containers for coal, bulk containers for mineral fertilizers and grain, and customized models that account for nearly 40% of its output. It also produces fitting platforms, spare parts for rolling stock, and since 2022 provides rolling stock servicing including current, depot, and overhaul repairs of freight cars. The enterprise is part of the RM Rail integrated holding, which unites several machine-building assets under the Russian Machines group, controlled by Oleg Deripaska's Basic Element. Abakanvagonmash has produced over one million containers used in 35 countries, including the USA, Germany, Norway, Finland, and Belgium. Its design capacity is 10,000 TEU per year for containers and 10,000 units for planned repairs, with a stated capacity of 2,000 special platforms and 20,000 universal and special containers per year. The company's clients include Russian Railways (RZD), the Russian Ministry of Defence, EMERCOM, Norilsk Nickel, Severstal, TransContainer, Tolyattiazot, and ALROSA. The plant also produces prefabricated block-frame modular buildings. Its conditional branding number is 2603.
History
The enterprise was founded in 1970 with the start of construction of a railcar-building complex designed to produce 40,000 containers per year. In 1974, construction began on a container plant for large-tonnage universal metal containers. The first production capacities were commissioned in 1975, and on 20 February 1976 the first platform for heavy containers was accepted. In 1977, the production association 'Abakanvagonmash' was created, with capacities for 1,000 platforms introduced; the Abakan container platform received an honorary diploma at the international exhibition 'Railway Transport-77' in Moscow. In 1978, the first container was manufactured, and the platform was awarded the State Quality Mark. In 1981, capacities for large-tonnage universal metal containers were introduced, along with a carbon dioxide station; the Abakan heavy container was awarded the State Quality Mark. In 1982, the plant's own thermal power plant was commissioned. In 1984, the State Quality Mark was again awarded to the universal large-tonnage container type 1C. During the Soviet period, the plant was among the largest enterprises in the city. In 1992, the production association was transformed into the State Enterprise 'Abakanvagonmash', and on 5 December 1992 into the Open Joint-Stock Company 'Abakanvagonmash'. In 1997, it was reorganized into OAO 'Abakanvagonmash'. In 2001, a branch was opened in Saint Petersburg. In 2013, the Arbitration Court of the Republic of Khakassia accepted bankruptcy applications from several creditors; the enterprise paid off its debt before the proceedings began. The company lost state support but negotiated with the Khakassia government on a project to create railway equipment production. In 2016, OAO 'Abakanvagonmash' was transformed into Public Joint-Stock Company 'Abakanvagonmash'. Today it operates as part of the RM Rail holding, which unites several machine-building assets under Russian Machines, controlled by Oleg Deripaska's Basic Element. The plant remains the only producer of large-tonnage containers in Russia and has produced over one million containers used in 35 countries.
