Overview

A. Frauenrath Bauunternehmen GmbH is a German construction company headquartered in Heinsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the core operating entity of the family-run Unternehmensgruppe Frauenrath. The group traces its origins to 1868, when Arnold Frauenrath worked as an independent paver in Hilfarth near Heinsberg. Over more than 150 years it has grown from a paving business into a diversified construction group active in the Rhineland and in Saxony, where it has operated a second location in Großröhrsdorf since 1992. The group describes itself as one of the leading medium-sized full-service construction providers in its regions. Its service portfolio covers earthworks, sewer and road construction, structural and turnkey building, project development, facility management, landscaping, recycling, demolition and refurbishment. These activities are bundled in seven companies and around 30 project and operating companies, plus numerous participations and working groups. The group is also involved in renewable energy, including wind turbines, a biomass power plant and its own photovoltaic installations, and it has been gradually converting its vehicle fleet to electric mobility. Ownership remains with the Frauenrath family. Arndt Frauenrath, who took over management in 1963, transformed the company into a full-service construction provider and served as president of the Zentralverband Deutsches Baugewerbe (ZDB) from 2000 to 2006. Since his death in 2015, the group has been led in the fifth generation by his sons Gereon and Jörg Frauenrath as managing partners; the sixth family generation has been active in the group since 2020. According to the company, the group had 444 employees and turnover of EUR 191 million in 2022, and its website cites around 500 employees, more than 100 construction machines, 32 certificates and total output of about EUR 200 million. In recent years the group has expanded into industrial park operation and hydrogen-related activities. It took over the Düren-Niederau industrial park from Nouryon Chemicals GmbH on 1 January 2022, and in 2026 it reported first successful production of green hydrogen from a PEM electrolyser in the Oberbruch industrial park as part of the H2HS project. In March 2026 the group announced the sale of its construction and recycling business to the French construction group Colas SA, a major strategic step for the company.

History

The history of the Unternehmensgruppe Frauenrath goes back to 1868, when Arnold Frauenrath worked as an independent paver in Hilfarth near Heinsberg. For decades the business remained a paving operation. A decisive turning point came in 1963, when Arndt Frauenrath took over the management of the company. Step by step he expanded it into a full-service provider around construction, adding new business fields and growing the group beyond its original trade. Under Arndt Frauenrath the company also gained prominence in the German construction industry. From 2000 to 2006 he served as president of the Zentralverband Deutsches Baugewerbe (ZDB), the central association of the German construction industry, and in 2006 he was awarded the Ehrenring des Deutschen Baugewerbes for his services to the sector. He died on 31 March 2015 at the age of 74. Geographic expansion began in 1992 with the establishment of a second location in Großröhrsdorf, Saxony, where Frauenrath Bauunternehmen GmbH was founded. In 1993 and 1999 the Frauenrath Recycling GmbH and Frauenrath Landschaftsbau GmbH were added at that site. In Heinsberg, the group grew through the founding of A. Frauenrath Recycling GmbH in 1981, A. Frauenrath Landschaftsbau GmbH & Co. KG in 1985 and A. Frauenrath BauConcept GmbH in 1999. The Thomas GmbH was part of the group from 1999 until the end of 2015. In 2000 Arndt Frauenrath established the Sozial- und Kulturstiftung A. Frauenrath, a social and cultural foundation that supports families in need in Heinsberg, social projects at home and abroad, and environmental, landscape and monument protection in the Heinsberg district, as well as education, culture and sport. Since 2016 the foundation has awarded the Arndt-Frauenrath-Ehrenpreis, endowed with EUR 1,000, to the best apprentice in the road builder trade in the Rurtal guild district. In the 2010s and 2020s the group diversified further. It became involved in renewable energy through wind turbines with a total capacity of 23.1 MW (as of 2020), a biomass power plant and its own photovoltaic installations, generating more than 62,000 MWh of renewable electricity in 2020. It also began converting its vehicle fleet to electric mobility. On 1 January 2022 the group took over the Düren-Niederau industrial park from Nouryon Chemicals GmbH; the 11-hectare site hosts companies from various sectors with around 300 jobs. In the same year, according to the company, the group had 444 employees and turnover of EUR 191 million. Leadership passed to the fifth generation: Arndt Frauenrath's sons Gereon and Jörg Frauenrath lead the group as managing partners, and since 2020 the sixth family generation has been active in the company. In 2026 the group reported first successful production of green hydrogen from a PEM electrolyser in the Oberbruch industrial park as part of the H2HS project, and in March 2026 it announced the sale of its construction and recycling business to the French construction group Colas SA.
