A. Film A/S, now generally identified in corporate and production contexts with A. Film Production A/S, is a Danish animation studio based in Copenhagen. It was established on 1 August 1988 by animators Stefan Fjeldmark, Karsten Kiilerich, Jørgen Lerdam and Hans Perk together with producer Anders Mastrup. The founders had met while working on Valhalla, a 1986 Danish animated feature based on the country's well-known comics. Their shared experience helped establish a studio capable of combining Danish creative direction with international production work. The company produces and provides animation services for feature films, television series, advertising and games. Its work has covered both hand-drawn or traditionally animated productions and computer-generated imagery, with later projects also using stop-motion and stereoscopic or 3D techniques. A. Film's own feature-film portfolio includes Danish and European properties such as Jungledyret Hugo, Help! I'm a Fish, Terkel in Trouble, Niko and the Way to the Stars, The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear and Checkered Ninja. The studio has also participated as a subcontractor or service provider on internationally distributed productions including The Iron Giant, Balto, Quest for Camelot, FernGully: The Last Rainforest, Thumbelina and Disney's Goofy: How to Hook Up Your Home Theater. A significant early corporate development came in 1995, when Danish media group Egmont acquired a 50% interest and placed A. Film under Nordisk Film's film division. This relationship connected the studio with a major Nordic media and distribution organization while leaving A. Film associated with its own animation identity. Since approximately the mid-1990s, a grinning pig designed by Finn Skovgaard has served as the studio's recognizable mascot and logo. The business was reorganized in 2010. A. Film Production A/S continued independent film production, while a separate A. Film A/S under Nordisk Film took responsibility for rights connected with earlier productions. The wider A. Film group has included A. Film Eesti in Tallinn, Estonia, established in 1994, and A. Film L.A., Inc. in Southern California, established in 2008. The group also previously operated or participated in studios in Riga and Munich, although those operations were later discontinued or separated. A. Film has been an important training ground for animators, several of whom later developed careers at major American animation companies including Disney and DreamWorks. Its output demonstrates a dual role: it is a producer of original and adapted Nordic family entertainment, and an international animation-services partner working on projects originating in several countries. The company remains associated with Copenhagen's animation sector and with a catalog spanning theatrical features, television series, shorts and production services.
