Overview
A Águia was a Portuguese illustrated literary and critical review founded in Porto in December 1910 by Álvaro Pinto, who served as its first director and proprietor. Initially described as a fortnightly illustrated review of literature and criticism, it became the principal organ of the Renascença Portuguesa, a socio-cultural movement that sought to renew Portuguese national identity through literature, art, science, philosophy and social criticism. The review's most fertile period ran from 1912 to 1916, when the Renascença Portuguesa was at its height. Although it passed through several editors, most issues were published under the direction of Teixeira de Pascoaes, the leading theorist of metaphysical saudosismo, whose ideas shaped much of the literary production that appeared in its pages. Over its two decades of existence, A Águia exercised a deep aesthetic and ideological influence on a large part of the Portuguese intelligentsia of the first quarter of the twentieth century, bringing together authors of different aesthetic tendencies under the common ideal of literary nationalism. Contributors ranged from Teixeira de Pascoaes and Leonardo Coimbra to symbolists, saudosists and surrealists such as Mário Beirão, Afonso Lopes Vieira, António Correia de Oliveira, Jaime Cortesão and Augusto Casimiro. The review ceased publication in 1932, and its digitized run is preserved by the Biblioteca Nacional Digital.
History
A Águia was launched in Porto in December 1910 as a fortnightly illustrated review of literature and criticism, directed and owned by Álvaro Pinto. Its first series ran from year 1, no. 1 (December 1910) and the publication continued until year 20, no. 3 (May–July 1932). From 1912 the review became the property of the Renascença Portuguesa, a movement of socio-cultural action, and was described as its organ, with Tércio de Miranda as director. The period from 1912 to 1916 was the review's most fertile phase, coinciding with the height of the Renascença Portuguesa. During the years 1912 to 1932 the direction of the review was also held at various times by Teixeira de Pascoaes, António Carneiro, Leonardo Coimbra, Teixeira Rego, Hernâni Cidade, Casais Monteiro, Sant'Anna Dionísio, Aarão de Lacerda and Delfim Santos. Under Teixeira de Pascoaes, the leading theorist of metaphysical saudosismo, most issues were published, and his ideas inspired much of the literary production that appeared in the review. A Águia exerted a profound aesthetic and ideological influence on a large part of the Portuguese intelligentsia of the first quarter of the twentieth century, gathering under the common ideal of literary nationalism authors of different aesthetic tendencies. Its contributors included intellectuals of diverse formation such as Teixeira de Pascoaes and Leonardo Coimbra, as well as cultivators of surrealism, saudosismo and symbolism, including Mário Beirão, Afonso Lopes Vieira, António Correia de Oliveira, Jaime Cortesão and Augusto Casimiro. The latter two later left the group to form Seara Nova, continuing their work there. Other collaborators included Veiga Simões, a follower of impressionism; Augusto Santa Rita and Ronald de Carvalho, delirious symbolists with a caricatural style fertile in synaesthesia; and the Viscount of Vila-Moura, a supporter of reactionary, Nietzschean-influenced ideas. The review ceased publication in 1932. Its digitized run is held by the Biblioteca Nacional Digital under the PURL 12152.
