Overview

7 Gold Telerent is a regional Italian television broadcaster based in Palermo, Sicily. Launched on 1 April 1984 by publisher Paolo Raffa as Telerent, it initially broadcast on UHF channel 34 from a transmitter on Monte Pellegrino. Over the decades it affiliated with various national circuits, including Retecapri, Junior Tv, TivuItalia, Amica 9 and Italia 9 Network, before becoming contractually linked to the 7 Gold circuit on 28 May 2007, when 7 Gold acquired a 50% stake in the broadcasting company. The station produces local news, sports, and entertainment programming, and is available in Sicily on digital terrestrial channels 15 and 19. Its programming includes Telerent Attualità, TG Gold, Speciale Gold Sport, and Real Time Magazine, among others. The headquarters have moved several times within Palermo, and the station continues to operate from its current studios.

History

Telerent was launched on 1 April 1984 by publisher Paolo Raffa, broadcasting on UHF channel 34 with a transmitting antenna installed on Monte Pellegrino in Palermo. Its initial premises were at via Abruzzi 15, later moving to via Vannantò 27. The first contract signed by the Palermo station was with the nascent national circuit Retecapri. Initially, transmission hours were limited, running from about 19:30 to 01:00. In addition to self-produced programs, the schedule included films and TV series such as La Fattoria dei Giorni Felici with Eva Gabor, Mary Hartman, cartoons like Daikengo, Danguard, and Gordian, telenovelas such as Non Basta una Vita and Carga Pesada, and some documentaries. In 1986, Telerent affiliated over time with Junior Tv, TivuItalia, Amica 9, and Italia 9 Network. Among its early self-productions were Tutto il Calcio, minuto per minuto (not to be confused with the Rai Radio 1 program of the same name) featuring live radio commentary of Juventus matches and real-time video updates of all Sunday football league results, and Febbre da Cavallo, a program dedicated to horse racing hosted by Fofò Montalbano. Programs like Gerardo in cucina with Gerardo Di Liberto enjoyed some success. The schedule soon covered the entire day, initially also relaying satellite broadcasts of the European music television Music Box and later Super Channel. After a few years, the station moved to new studios at via Aloisio Juvara 117, remaining there for several years, and finally moved to its current premises at via Antonio Rallo 8, where it continues its television history today. During 1987, it entered syndication with Italia 9 Network, then briefly with TivuItalia. The network's schedule was greatly enriched; a newscast with four editions aired at 14:30, 18:30, 22:30, and 00:30 (now under the title Telerent Attualità with only two editions). TV series included Sceriffo Lobo, Fantasilandia, Cover Up, Professione Ladro, and telenovelas Victoria and Señora, along with many segments dedicated to card reading and Lotto predictions. In April 1994, Telerent joined the Amica 9 circuit managed by D.A.P.S. Among the segments aired in these years were Preview, Work Dance, Così è se vi Piace, Limitati Network, A' la Coque, Grand Hotel Cabaret, Granelli di Sabbia, Librarsi, sports segments Petali di Rosa and Domenica in Rosa, the variety show Simbol Night, and the religious segment Fra' Tommaso. Among self-productions of the new millennium, Real Time Magazine and Salute & Benessere are notable. Since 28 May 2007, Telerent has been contractually linked to the national 7 Gold circuit, which acquired 50% of the broadcasting company. Information programming begins at 7:00 with the live segment 7 in Punto, hosted alternately from Palermo and Catania studios. The Palermo editorial team of 7 Gold - Telerent includes journalists Chiara Franceschi, Gabriella di Carlo, Marta Dragna, Paolo Di Girolamo, and Michele Mencarelli. The technical structure relies on several external consultants, notably Piero Dell'Aria, while local advertising sales are handled by various agents, including Giuseppe Tabita. The newscast, no longer self-produced but purchased from an external company (Mediactivity - via Aloisio Juvara in Palermo), was called TVNEWS with a daily edition that aired until the early 2010s around 19:15. On 15 November 2008, Telerent acquired two frequencies from TvT, a well-known Palermo TV station (which closed in 2014), to increase the audience reach of the national 7 Gold circuit it belongs to (particularly along the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, thanks to the acquisition of frequencies at Monte San Martino (Capo d'Orlando) and Gioiosa Vecchia near Gioiosa Marea). Continuing to activate new digital frequencies, in February 2009 the Palermo TV station activated new channel 41 UHF from Contrada Costa Zita in Marineo for most of the provinces of Agrigento and Palermo, while it also began broadcasting on channel 66 UHF from Piazza Macchiarella in Ficarazzi (both channels shared with Canale 8 Teleficarazzi, which owns them) for the Villabate area and surroundings, resolving many reception difficulties caused by the difficult terrain. From the end of August 2009, the Palermo station activated channel 28 UHF in the towns of Cinisi and Terrasini from the Santuario Madonna di Trapani site at the Terrasini motorway junction (the latter repositioned to channel 46 UHF on 31 December 2011), while from 14 October 2010 it took over channel E9 VHF from Monte Pellegrino, previously belonging to Radio Italia TV. With the advent of digital terrestrial television, Telerent also prepared for the transition to the new technology, and from 19 June 2012 to 4 July of the same year, the Palermo station converted its transmission equipment as the switch-off dates progressed.
