Overview

The 66th Air Base Group is a non-flying United States Air Force unit headquartered at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Rather than operating as a commercial brand, it functions as an installation-support and host organization within the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, itself part of Air Force Materiel Command. Its primary responsibility is to provide the personnel, security, medical, force-support, and other base services needed for the operation of Hanscom Air Force Base and for the military and civilian community located there. At Hanscom, the group supports more than 5,000 active-duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Department of Defense civilian personnel who work and live on the installation. Its regional support role extends beyond the active base population: the organization also provides assistance to more than 100,000 military retirees, annuitants, and spouses residing across the six-state New England region and New York. This makes the group both a local base-host organization and an important administrative and community-support institution for a broad retired military population. The unit's present structure includes the 66th Security Forces Squadron, 66th Force Support Squadron, and 66th Medical Squadron. These components collectively cover installation security and law enforcement, personnel and family services, morale and welfare functions, readiness and logistical support, and medical care. The group has no aircraft assigned and is not a flying or combat aviation formation. The organization's lineage reaches back to the 66th Air Base Group (Special), which was constituted in August 1940 and activated at Maxwell Field, Alabama, on 1 September 1940. It was redesignated the 66th Service Group in 1942 and was disbanded in February 1944 after wartime service at bases in Alabama, California, and Louisiana. A separate 66th Air Base Group lineage was constituted in 1952 and activated in 1953. Over subsequent decades it was redesignated the 66th Combat Support Group, 66th Support Group, and 66th Mission Support Group as the Air Force reorganized its support and operational structures. The modern 66th Air Base Group was created through the consolidation of the earlier 66th Service Group and the 66th Mission Support Group in 2010. This change followed the inactivation of the 66th Air Base Wing and brought the installation-host and mission-support lineage together under the current designation. The group has been stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base since 1994, after earlier assignments and locations in the United States and Europe, including Shaw Air Force Base, Sembach Air Base, Laon Air Base, RAF Upper Heyford, and RAF Wethersfield. The group's institutional identity is therefore defined by continuity of service rather than consumer-facing products or commercial positioning. Its principal output is the reliable operation and support of an Air Force installation, including protection of personnel and property, health services, workforce and family support, and assistance to the wider military community. It remains assigned within the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and continues to serve as Hanscom Air Force Base's host unit.

History

The lineage associated with the 66th Air Base Group begins during the expansion of the United States Army Air Corps before and during the Second World War. The unit was constituted as the 66th Air Base Group (Special) on 16 August 1940 and activated at Maxwell Field, Alabama, on 1 September of that year. It moved to Montgomery Airport in October 1940 and was redesignated the 66th Service Group on 13 June 1942. In 1943 it moved first to Santa Maria Army Air Field in California and then to Barksdale Field, Louisiana. The wartime service-group organization was disbanded on 1 February 1944. A separate 66th Air Base Group lineage was constituted on 15 November 1952 and activated on 1 January 1953. Initially assigned to the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, it was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, before moving to Sembach Air Base in Germany in July 1953. It later served at Laon Air Base in France and RAF Upper Heyford and RAF Wethersfield in the United Kingdom. These assignments reflected the group's role in supporting Air Force reconnaissance and electronic-combat formations rather than flying aircraft itself. The postwar organization underwent several designation changes. On 15 August 1962 it became the 66th Combat Support Group. It was inactivated in October 1970, activated again in June 1985 at Sembach Air Base, and inactivated in March 1992. The group was redesignated the 66th Support Group in September 1994 and activated at Hanscom Air Force Base on 1 October 1994 under the 66th Air Base Wing. In 2002 it became the 66th Mission Support Group. The current organization resulted from an institutional consolidation completed on 30 June 2010. The 66th Mission Support Group was consolidated with the earlier 66th Service Group lineage and redesignated the 66th Air Base Group. The change coincided with the inactivation of the 66th Air Base Wing and established the group as the host organization for Hanscom Air Force Base. From 2010 to 2012 it was associated with the Electronic Systems Center and, after the July 2012 transition, attached to the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. Since 1 October 2012 it has remained within the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, under Air Force Materiel Command. The group is organized around three principal squadrons: the 66th Security Forces Squadron, the 66th Force Support Squadron, and the 66th Medical Squadron. Together they provide the core services required for a functioning Air Force installation. Security Forces protect the base and enforce security requirements; Force Support delivers personnel, family, community, readiness, and related support; and the Medical Squadron provides healthcare and medical readiness functions. Hanscom is the group's permanent station and operational center. The 66th Air Base Group supports more than 5,000 active-duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Department of Defense civilian personnel at the base. It also serves a much larger community of more than 100,000 retirees, annuitants, and spouses across New England and New York. No aircraft are assigned to the unit, underscoring its role as a host and support organization rather than an aviation formation.
