Overview
The 548th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group (548 ISRG) is an intelligence unit of the United States Air Force located at Beale Air Force Base, California. Its lineage reaches back to the 6th Photographic Technical Squadron, constituted on 20 November 1943 and activated on 1 December 1943. After training in the United States, the squadron deployed to the Southwest Pacific Theater and served in the Pacific through VJ Day. Following World War II it remained in the Far East as part of the occupation forces in Japan, and it was still in Japan as the 548th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron when the Korean War began in June 1950. It supported reconnaissance units in Japan until it was inactivated in 1960. The unit was reactivated in October 1965 to support Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. As the Vietnam War increased the demand for photographic interpretation, it expanded from a squadron to a group two years later, becoming the 548th Reconnaissance Technical Group on 1 October 1967. It continued to serve in the Pacific until inactivating in 1992. As the 548th Air Intelligence Group, it was activated in August 1992 to support Air Combat Command intelligence requirements, then inactivated again in October 1994. Its most recent activation took place at Beale Air Force Base in October 2003, when it was redesignated the 548th Intelligence Group and activated on 1 December 2003. It was redesignated the 548th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group on 1 January 2009. The group's mission is to operate and maintain the AN/GSQ-272 "Sentinel" weapon system, also known as the Distributed Ground Station (DGS), and to provide combatant commanders with processing, exploitation and dissemination (PED) of actionable intelligence data collected by U-2, MQ-1, MQ-9 and RQ-4 aircraft and other platforms as required. The Sentinel system is described in the unit's public material as a $1 billion weapon system. The 548 ISRG is assigned to the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, with which it has served since 1 December 2003. Its component squadrons include the 9th Intelligence Squadron, the 13th Intelligence Squadron and the 48th Intelligence Support Squadron, all active since December 2003, and the 553d Intelligence Squadron, active since June 2022. Over its history the unit has been stationed at locations including Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma; Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands; Morotai and Leyte in the Philippines; Tokyo and Yokota Air Base in Japan; Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; Langley Air Force Base, Virginia; and, since 1 December 2003, Beale Air Force Base, California.
