Overview

FiftyEight is a British social enterprise and certified B Corporation founded in 2014 in Liverpool by Quintin and Angela Lake. The organisation works at the intersection of technology, research and consultancy to address modern slavery, child labour and other human rights challenges in global supply chains. Its vision is "good work for people everywhere," and it partners with businesses, academia, government and civil society to raise working conditions globally. The company's flagship offering is Just Good Work, an interactive mobile platform that helps migrant workers make informed choices about working abroad and increases transparency in recruitment and employment. Other solutions include IKAN, which addresses transparency and accountability in contracts and wage payments for tuna fisheries fishers, and MeL, a tool for gathering grassroots data to analyse the impact of human rights programmes. FiftyEight also provides consultancy, training and governance briefings to help organisations meet responsible procurement demands. FiftyEight achieved B Corp certification in 2020 with an overall score of 156.6, placing it in the top 1% of B Corps globally and among the highest scoring in the UK. The company reinvests at least 80% of its profits into projects tackling modern slavery and child labour, including keeping Just Good Work freely available to workers. It operates in multiple countries and has been backed by all major UK supermarkets as the primary worker rights information source for seasonal workers entering the UK.

History

FiftyEight was founded in 2014 in Liverpool, United Kingdom, by Quintin and Angela Lake. The couple met on a factory floor in 2003, and an article in National Geographic sparked a conversation about modern slavery. In 2011, during a trip around Asia, they were struck by the positive impact that good business models can have on people and communities, and the idea for FiftyEight began to grow. Upon returning to the UK, they gained the knowledge and experience necessary to work with companies internationally, and launched FiftyEight in 2014. The name FiftyEight comes from a chapter in the Old Testament book of Isaiah which challenges us to ensure our workplaces and communities are free from exploitation and injustice. In 2016, in the wake of the UK's Modern Slavery Act, Quintin's research for Hult Ashridge business school delivered key findings on corporate approaches to addressing modern slavery. In 2018, FiftyEight joined the PACE consortium to find effective approaches to ending the worst forms of child labour in fragile contexts. In 2019, Just Good Work, FiftyEight's mobile app for migrant workers, was launched for workers travelling from Kenya to Qatar. In 2020, Just Good Work launched in the UK and Malaysia, and FiftyEight achieved B Corp certification with an overall score of 156.6, placing it in the top 1% of B Corps globally and among the highest scoring in the UK. In 2022, Just Good Work was backed by all major supermarkets as the primary worker rights information source for all seasonal workers entering the UK. FiftyEight continues to operate as a social enterprise, partnering with business, academia, government and civil society to address exploitation in supply chains. It reinvests at least 80% of its profits into projects tackling modern slavery and child labour, and its solutions are used across multiple countries.
