Overview

45 Scientific is a French independent record label founded in September 1999 as a SARL by Geraldo, Booba, Ali and Jean-Pierre Seck (JP Seck). Although the first release on the label was the maxi "Civilisé", the label was originally created to release "Mauvais œil", the album by the duo Lunatic (Booba and Ali). After approaching major labels for a wider release, the members decided to self-produce the album with distribution handled by Warner. "Mauvais Œil" became a gold record with more than 100,000 sales, making 45 Scientific the second independent label after L'Homicide Volontaire to receive a gold disc; 361 records would follow years later. The label is closely associated with the early careers of Booba and Ali. In 2002, Booba's solo album "Temps mort" was released on 45 Scientific. The label negotiated with Skyrock to organize a Planète Rap, but the station's director Laurent Bouneau initially refused, citing Booba's controversial line in "Si tu kiffes pas": "J'aime voir des CRS morts". Bouneau later proposed a Planète Rap without Booba in the studio, calling his rap "rap de village". In an interview on Générations, Geraldo and JP Seck explained their opposition to Bouneau's vision of rap. At the end of 2002, "Temps mort" was reissued with two new tracks, including "Destinée" featuring Kayna Samet. Given the album's huge success, Skyrock eventually played "Destinée" without the label's agreement. The label later released Hi-Fi's album "Rien à perdre rien à prouver", which went relatively unnoticed. Shortly after, Booba left the label and gave an interview to Groove magazine explaining his reasons. Geraldo, JP Seck and Ali immediately denied most of Booba's statements on Générations 88.2, explaining that his departure did not jeopardize the label's future and detailing points of discord (the signing of Ill, a clothing brand, business). In 2005, Ali released "Chaos & Harmonie". The independent label then entered a difficult period. On 20 February 2006, 45 Scientific put out Lunatic's "Black Album", containing two unreleased solo tracks by Ali and Booba plus numerous remixes. Booba sued the label and opposed the release, particularly because of his solo track "Tony Coulibaly". Shortly after, JP Seck left the label. Later, Lalcko and Escobar also left. The label resurfaced at the end of 2006 by reissuing "Mauvais œil", "Temps mort" and "Chaos & harmonie". Today, 45 Scientific operates an online shop selling vinyl reissues, box sets, T-shirts and other merchandise related to its catalog and associated artists. The shop offers items such as the "Coffret 45" pre-order box set (double yellow vinyl of the 45 Scientific album plus an unreleased track, double transparent white vinyl of Booba's "Temps Mort", double blue vinyl of Lunatic's "Mauvais Oeil", and a T-shirt), a double blue vinyl instrumental edition of Lunatic's "Mauvais Oeil" with a beanie, and various CDs and beanies. The label remains a notable independent force in French hip-hop history.

History

45 Scientific was founded in September 1999 as a SARL by Geraldo, Booba, Ali and Jean-Pierre Seck (JP Seck). The label was created primarily to release "Mauvais œil", the album by Lunatic, the duo of Booba and Ali. Although the first release on the label was the maxi "Civilisé", the members had initially approached major labels to secure a wide release for "Mauvais œil". When those efforts failed, they decided to self-produce the album with distribution by Warner. "Mauvais Œil" achieved gold record status with over 100,000 sales, making 45 Scientific the second independent label after L'Homicide Volontaire to earn a gold disc; 361 records would achieve the same years later. To promote the album, 45 Scientific opened negotiations with Skyrock to organize a Planète Rap. Laurent Bouneau refused, citing Booba's line in "Si tu kiffes pas": "J'aime voir des CRS morts". In early 2002, Booba's solo album "Temps mort" was released on the label. The label again negotiated with Bouneau for a Planète Rap. Bouneau proposed a Planète Rap without Booba in the studio, calling his rap "rap de village". In an interview on Générations, Geraldo and JP Seck explained their opposition to Bouneau's vision of rap, which they said "formate les trucs" and plays "du rap à l'eau" (an expression borrowed from Doc Gyneco's "Tout saigne"). At the end of 2002, "Temps mort" was reissued with two new tracks, including "Destinée" featuring Kayna Samet. Given the album's immense success, Skyrock eventually played "Destinée", the most mainstream track, without the label's agreement. The label then released Hi-Fi's album "Rien à perdre rien à prouver", which went relatively unnoticed. Shortly after, Booba left the label and gave an interview to Groove magazine explaining his reasons. Geraldo, JP Seck and Ali immediately denied most of Booba's statements on Générations 88.2. They explained that his departure did not jeopardize the label's future and detailed points of discord (the signing of Ill, a clothing brand, business). In 2005, Ali released "Chaos & Harmonie". At this point the independent label entered a difficult period. On 20 February 2006, 45 Scientific put out Lunatic's "Black Album", containing two unreleased solo tracks by Ali and Booba plus numerous remixes of previously released songs. In the 2010s, the label released projects such as Hi-Fi's "Plus Rien à Perdre, Plus Rien à Prouver/Babylon System" (2010) and Cris Prolific's "Art/Money Vol. 1" (2010). Today, 45 Scientific operates an online shop selling vinyl reissues, box sets, T-shirts and other merchandise.
