Overview

The 404th Air Expeditionary Group is a provisional United States Air Force unit assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe. Unlike a conventional commercial brand, it is an operational military formation that can be activated, deployed, reorganized, and inactivated according to mission requirements. Its functions have included airlift support, aerial-port operations, aircraft maintenance, communications, early warning, air-domain safety and security, medical support, airfield preparation, and support for senior-level diplomatic or presidential visits. The group’s modern provisional identity was established in 2003, although its lineage incorporates older formations with World War II and Cold War histories. In its World War II lineage, the organization began as the 100th Fighter Wing, established and organized in England in late 1943 for service with Ninth Air Force and IX Fighter Command. Beginning operational missions in April 1944, it directed subordinate fighter groups against German targets in occupied France and the Low Countries. Its targets included bridges, roads, railways, enemy aircraft, and other transportation and military infrastructure in the period leading up to the Normandy invasion. After D-Day, the wing supported United States First Army operations as Allied forces advanced through France and into Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Its aircraft conducted close air support and attacks on targets in the Cotentin Peninsula, supported Operation Cobra and the breakout from Normandy, participated in operations around the Falaise-Argentan area, and later supported the Battle of the Bulge and the Allied advance across the Rhineland. The formation also assisted First Army operations around the Remagen bridgehead and the encirclement of German forces in the Ruhr. Combat operations ended on 5 May 1945, after which the wing remained in Europe for occupation duties and activities connected with the recovery or disposal of captured enemy equipment. It was inactivated in Germany in August 1945 and its World War II lineage was subsequently preserved through later consolidations. A second major strand of the lineage began with the 704th Strategic Missile Wing, activated at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, in 1957. The wing trained personnel on the SM-65 Atlas, PGM-19 Jupiter, and PGM-17 Thor missile systems before being inactivated in 1959. In 1985, the 100th Fighter Wing and 704th Strategic Missile Wing lineages were consolidated, and the resulting organization was redesignated the 404th Tactical Missile Wing. In 2003, it was redesignated the 404th Air Expeditionary Group and converted to provisional status. The group has been activated and inactivated repeatedly since 2003. It was activated at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom in June 2003 and was later used for missions in Europe and Africa. During a 2008 deployment to Romania, it operated as part of the 323d Air Expeditionary Wing and helped prepare the airfield at Câmpia Turzii for the stationing of F-15 fighter aircraft. The group was also associated with the 2008 Bucharest summit mission at Balotești, supporting the temporary United States Air Force headquarters established for that event. The group was last activated on 1 October 2008 to provide airlift support for United States Africa Command. In January 2009, it deployed to Rwanda to airlift equipment for the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur. In July 2009, it deployed to Ghana to provide aerial-port and aircraft-maintenance teams, forward communications, early-warning capabilities, and air-domain safety and security elements for United States President Barack Obama’s visit. The organization’s provisional structure allows the Air Force to assemble tailored capabilities for such missions without maintaining a permanently staffed group at a single overseas base. Public sources do not establish a current activation status, permanent headquarters, commercial ownership, or a current commander.

History

The 404th Air Expeditionary Group is a provisional United States Air Force formation whose current identity derives from a long and composite lineage. Its principal World War II predecessor was the 100th Fighter Wing, established on 8 November 1943 and activated in England on 24 November of that year. Assigned to the European Theater of Operations under Ninth Air Force and IX Fighter Command, the wing began combat operations in April 1944. It directed fighter groups against bridges, roads, railways, enemy aircraft, and other targets in occupied France and the Low Countries in preparation for the Normandy invasion. Following D-Day, the wing shifted toward direct support of United States First Army operations. It operated from liberated airfields and temporary advanced landing grounds in France while attacking targets in the Cotentin Peninsula and supporting Operation Cobra, the Allied breakout from Normandy. Its area of operations subsequently expanded through northern France, Belgium, the southern Netherlands, and Germany. During the winter of 1944–45, it participated in operations connected with the Battle of the Bulge and then supported the Allied advance into the Rhineland. The wing assisted First Army operations at Remagen and attacked targets in and around the Ruhr as Allied forces surrounded German formations there. Combat ended on 5 May 1945. The organization remained in Europe for several months, performing occupation duties and helping process captured enemy equipment, before being inactivated in Germany in August 1945. The lineage also includes the 704th Strategic Missile Wing, established on 20 May 1957 and activated at Vandenberg Air Force Base on 1 July 1957. The wing trained on several early United States ballistic missile systems, including Atlas, Jupiter, and Thor. It was not operational until late 1957 and was inactivated in 1959. The 100th Fighter Wing lineage was later reestablished and consolidated with the 704th Strategic Missile Wing in 1985, producing the 404th Tactical Missile Wing. On 24 March 2003, the organization was redesignated the 404th Air Expeditionary Group and converted to provisional status. It was activated and inactivated numerous times during the following years, including deployments to RAF Mildenhall in 2003 and other European locations. In 2008, it formed part of the 323d Air Expeditionary Wing during the Bucharest summit mission in Romania. The group helped prepare the Câmpia Turzii airfield for F-15 fighter operations and supported the temporary United States Air Force headquarters associated with the summit. The group was activated again on 1 October 2008 for airlift support to United States Africa Command. Its subsequent activities included a January 2009 deployment to Rwanda, where it transported equipment for the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur, and a July 2009 deployment to Ghana in support of President Barack Obama’s visit. The Ghana mission combined aerial-port and aircraft-maintenance teams with communications, early-warning, and air-domain safety and security elements. Because the unit is provisional, activation dates and mission composition are more significant than a permanent base or continuous commercial-style operation. Publicly available reference material does not identify a current commander or confirm whether the group remains active today.
