Overview

The 192nd (Crow's Nest Pass) Battalion, CEF, was a unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force raised during the First World War. Authorization to recruit the battalion was published in General Order 69 on 15 July 1916, and organization took place in Blairmore, Alberta and the surrounding district in January 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Edward Lyon. The unit drew its name from the Crow's Nest Pass region of the Rocky Mountains, an area of coal mining and railway towns in southern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia. The battalion's total strength was 23 officers and 424 soldiers of other ranks. It embarked from Halifax on 1 November 1916 aboard the RMS Empress of Britain and disembarked in England ten days later, on 11 November 1916. Rather than being kept as a fighting unit, the 192nd Battalion was absorbed into the 9th Reserve Battalion on 12 November 1916, the day after its arrival in England. It was disbanded by Privy Council Order 2702 on 12 October 1917. Perpetuation of the 192nd Battalion was assigned to the North Alberta Regiment in 1924; that regiment disbanded in 1936. In 1929 the battalion was awarded the theatre of war honour "The Great War, 1916." Like many of the numbered CEF battalions raised in 1915–1916, the 192nd never saw service as a formed unit at the front, its personnel being used to reinforce other battalions through the reserve system.
