Overview

Takasaki Montres (高崎モントレー) is a station building (ekibiru) shopping complex located at the west exit of Takasaki Station in Yashima-cho, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. It opened in 1982 to coincide with the construction of the Joetsu Shinkansen. The facility is operated by Takasaki Terminal Building Co., Ltd. (高崎ターミナルビル株式会社), a subsidiary of Atre Co., Ltd., which is part of the JR East Group. The building has seven above-ground floors (the Montres portion), with shopping floors open from 10:00 to 20:30 and restaurant floors from 11:00 to 21:30. It houses a mix of retail tenants including fashion, food, drugstores, bookstores, and services, as well as the Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki on floors 6 to 10. The complex is a key commercial hub in the Takasaki Station area, serving both commuters and local residents. It has undergone various renovations and tenant changes over the years, and its loyalty program was integrated into the JR East Group's JRE POINT system in 2016. The building is known locally simply as "Montres."

History

Takasaki Montres opened on April 14, 1982, ahead of the November 1982 opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen, as a station building at the transportation hub of Takasaki Station. It was developed alongside the Takasaki Terminal Hotel. The operating company, Takasaki Terminal Building Co., Ltd., was established on December 25, 1979. In 1987, the Kumagai Station building "Az Kumagai" opened. In 1996, Takasaki Terminal Building Co., Ltd. merged with Takasaki Terminal Hotel Co., Ltd., and the hotel was renamed Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki. That same year, Az Second opened within Kumagai Station, followed by Az Road in 1997 and Az East in 2004. In 2005, the company merged with Kumagai Station Development Co., Ltd. (operator of the Kumagai Station building "Az"). In 2007, E-site Maebashi opened. In 2009, the company absorbed JR Takasaki Shoji Co., Ltd. through a company split and merged with Takasaki Terminal Building Shoji Co., Ltd., and also absorbed Metropolitan Takasaki Co., Ltd. through a company split. In 2010, E-site Ageo and E-site Takasaki opened, and in 2011, E-site Kagohara opened, along with the opening of the local products zone "Gunma Iroha" within E-site Takasaki. In 2015, due to the JR Group company reorganization, the company became part of the Atre Group. The Montres building itself has seen various tenant changes and updates. Its loyalty program, "Club m," was replaced by the JR East Group's common "JRE POINT" system on October 25, 2016, and the Club m card service ended on October 31, 2017. The large clock on the 5th-floor exterior wall, installed two years after the building opened, stopped in January 2025 due to aging, and a replacement clock was installed nearby in November 2025; the old clock was removed in January 2026.
