Overview

Gold Hongye Paper (金红叶纸业) is a Chinese tissue and hygiene paper manufacturer and a key operating company within Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), the pulp and paper arm of Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group. Established in the mid-1990s and headquartered in Suzhou, Jiangsu, the company produces toilet paper, facial tissue, paper towels, napkins, and related household paper products for the Chinese market and for export. It is one of the largest tissue paper producers in China by capacity, operating multiple mills and converting facilities and marketing well-known consumer tissue brands such as Breeze (清风) and Virjoy (唯洁雅). Gold Hongye's business spans the full tissue value chain, from pulp sourcing through papermaking to converting and consumer packaging. Its product range covers everyday household tissue — roll toilet paper, boxed and soft-pack facial tissue, kitchen towels, and pocket packs — as well as away-from-home and commercial tissue products. The company distributes through supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores, e-commerce platforms, and wholesale channels across China, and it also serves export markets in Asia and beyond. As part of APP, Gold Hongye benefits from the group's integrated pulp supply, large-scale manufacturing, and regional distribution network. APP has faced international scrutiny over deforestation and sustainability issues in its supply chain, and Gold Hongye has participated in APP's sustainability commitments and forest conservation policies in response. The company remains a significant player in China's highly competitive tissue market, competing with domestic and international brands. Gold Hongye is not a separately listed company; it operates as a subsidiary within the privately held Sinar Mas/APP group. Its corporate identity is closely tied to APP's Chinese operations, and it is a recognized name in China's household paper industry.

History

Gold Hongye Paper was established in the mid-1990s as part of Asia Pulp & Paper's expansion into China's fast-growing consumer tissue market. APP, the pulp and paper subsidiary of Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group, invested heavily in Chinese papermaking capacity during the 1990s and 2000s, and Gold Hongye became one of its principal tissue-producing and marketing platforms in the country. Headquartered in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, the company built and operated large tissue mills and converting plants to serve both domestic and export demand. Through the 2000s and 2010s, Gold Hongye expanded its product portfolio and distribution reach, developing consumer tissue brands such as Breeze (清风) and Virjoy (唯洁雅) that became widely available in Chinese supermarkets, hypermarkets, and later e-commerce channels. The company invested in modern paper machines and converting lines, increasing capacity to compete with both domestic tissue producers and international brands. Its integration with APP gave it access to pulp and parent-group logistics, supporting cost competitiveness in a market characterized by price competition and periodic overcapacity. APP's global operations came under international scrutiny in the 2000s and 2010s over allegations of unsustainable forestry practices and deforestation linked to its supply chain, particularly in Indonesia. In response, APP adopted a Forest Conservation Policy in 2013 and made sustainability commitments covering its operations and suppliers. Gold Hongye, as part of APP's Chinese business, participated in these group-level sustainability initiatives and faced the same reputational pressures as its parent in environmental and social responsibility discussions. In the 2010s and 2020s, China's tissue market continued to grow, driven by rising living standards, urbanization, and demand for hygiene products. Gold Hongye remained among the leading tissue producers in the country, competing with major domestic players and international brands. The company continued to invest in capacity, product innovation, and brand marketing, while operating within the privately held Sinar Mas/APP group structure. It has not been separately listed on a stock exchange, and its financial results are consolidated within APP and Sinar Mas reporting.

Parent company APP accused of deforestation for pulpwood plantations in Yunnan, Hainan

Greenpeace accused Sinar Mas Group's APP (parent of Gold Hongye Paper) of cutting natural forests in Yunnan, Hainan and other places under the name of "barren hill afforestation" and replanting them with eucalyptus and other pulpwood raw material forests. A 2005 State Forestry Administration investigation found unlicensed logging in the Yunnan project, some involving APP; in 2011, reports said that a quarter of Hainan's natural forests disappeared in 10 years in connection with pulpwood plantations. The State Forestry Administration asked local authorities to pursue accountability in accordance with law, saying deforestation incidents did occur but were not planned acts; APP promised to operate in accordance with law.
