Overview

遠景出版事業有限公司 is a Taiwanese publishing company founded in 1974 by Shen Deng'en. It pioneered color covers in Taiwan's publishing industry and was the first to introduce Jin Yong's martial arts novels to Taiwan in 1980. The company has published over a thousand titles, including the 54-title, 64-volume Nobel Prize in Literature collection (1982), works by Hu Lancheng, Lu Qiao, Gao Yang, Lin Xingzhi, and Taiwanese literature classics. After founder Shen Deng'en passed away, the company continued under a current publisher, reissuing classic works and discovering new writers. It also imports Hong Kong publications to Taiwan.

History

遠景出版事業有限公司 was founded in 1974 by Shen Deng'en. After Taiwanese writer Huang Chunming's 《鑼》 was published, the company's subsequent thirty years began. It pioneered many publishing firsts in Taiwan: it was the first to bring color to book covers, and during the martial law period it systematically published Taiwanese literature despite difficulties. Representative works include Chen Ruoxi's 《尹縣長》. It was the first publisher to introduce Jin Yong's martial arts novels to Taiwan; at the time these books were still banned, but the founder saw readers' demand and after continuous negotiations with the Government Information Office, Taiwanese readers were able to enjoy Jin Yong's martial arts novels in 1980. After writer Li Ao was released from prison, the company was the first to publish his books; 《獨白下的傳統》 and 《傳統下的獨白》 caused a great sensation. The company also published the 《諾貝爾文學獎全集》, which the publishing industry considered an impossible task: 54 titles in 64 volumes, taking three years and costing nearly NT$70 million, launched in 1982. Full-page advertisements were placed in Chinese-language newspapers at home and abroad. Currently the company has accumulated over a thousand publications, including Hu Lancheng's 《今生今世》 and 《山河歲月》, Lu Qiao's 《人子》 and 《懺情書》 (with 《人子》 remaining a recommended reading for teachers and parents for thirty years), the 《高陽作品集》, the 《林行止作品集》 (over 106 volumes in more than ten years), and the 《世界文學全集》 (over 100 volumes). It also published a series of Taiwanese literature works, including Zhong Zhaozheng's 《台灣人三部曲》, 《濁流三部曲》, and 《魯冰花》, Li Qiao's 《寒夜三部曲》, and earlier 《鍾理和全集》 and 《吳新榮全集》, as well as 《林語堂作品集》. The company was one of the early publishers with the most frequent interactions with Hong Kong's cultural circles; writers such as Dong Qiao, Dong Qianli, Dai Tian, and Hu Juren were already its authors, and it successively introduced 《金庸武俠小說》 and 《倪匡科幻小說》. After founder Shen Deng'en passed away, the current publisher continues to develop literary books, systematically re-editing and republishing past classic works, including 《林語堂作品集》 and 《鍾肇政作品》. It also discovered new-generation writer He Yingjie, whose 《後山地圖》 won the 2008 Wu Yongfu Literature Award; subsequent authors Guo Hanchen, Ke Pinwen, and Xie Wenxian have produced works. Well-known poet Lu Hanxiu and reportage writer Peng Yiping also joined. Since 2007, the company has imported Hong Kong literary magazine 《字花》, 《花千樹出版社》, 《kubrick書店》, and 《匯智出版社》 publications to Taiwan, promoting closer literary exchange between Hong Kong and Taiwan.
