Overview

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is the video game division of Japan's Sony Group Corporation and the company behind the PlayStation family of consoles and services. It was formed in April 2016, when Sony merged Sony Computer Entertainment (the PlayStation hardware and software business) with Sony Network Entertainment International (the PlayStation Network and digital services business) into a single global entity. SIE is headquartered in San Mateo, California, with corporate functions tied to Sony's Tokyo base, and it operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. SIE's business spans console hardware, accessories, first-party game development and publishing, third-party licensing, and digital services. Its flagship products are the PlayStation consoles — most recently the PlayStation 5 and its disc-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, plus the handheld-style PlayStation Portal remote player — alongside the PlayStation Network, the PlayStation Plus subscription service, and the PlayStation Store. SIE also owns and operates a portfolio of first-party studios, including Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch Productions, Polyphony Digital, Media Molecule, Bend Studio, San Diego Studio and the PlayStation Studios umbrella, plus acquired teams such as Bungie and Haven Studios. SIE competes globally with Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo in the console market, and increasingly with PC storefronts and mobile gaming. Its strategy has emphasized exclusive first-party titles, live-service and multiplayer investments, subscription growth through PlayStation Plus tiers, and expansion into PC releases of former console exclusives. The division is a major profit contributor to Sony Group and a central pillar of Sony's entertainment strategy alongside music, pictures and image sensors. SIE's public profile includes leadership changes — Jim Ryan retired as president and CEO in 2024 and was succeeded by Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst in a dual-CEO structure — as well as periodic restructuring, studio closures and layoffs, and high-profile acquisitions. It remains one of the most recognized brands in interactive entertainment.

History

Sony's console business began with the original PlayStation, launched in Japan in December 1994 by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), a subsidiary established in 1993 to develop and market game hardware and software. The PlayStation succeeded on the strength of CD-ROM media, third-party support and titles such as Ridge Racer and Final Fantasy VII, and it established Sony as a major force in interactive entertainment. The PlayStation 2 followed in 2000 and became the best-selling home console of all time, while the PlayStation Portable (2004) and PlayStation 3 (2006) extended the brand into handheld and high-definition eras. The PlayStation 4 (2013) restored momentum with a developer-friendly architecture and strong first-party output, and the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020. In parallel, Sony built out digital services. Sony Network Entertainment International was created to run the PlayStation Network, the online service launched with the PlayStation 3 era that grew into a storefront, multiplayer service and subscription business. In April 2016, Sony merged Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International into Sony Interactive Entertainment, unifying hardware, software and network operations under one global organization headquartered in San Mateo, California, with corporate headquarters in Tokyo. Under SIE, the PlayStation 4 generation closed as one of Sony's most successful, and the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 amid global supply constraints. SIE invested heavily in first-party studios, acquiring Insomniac Games (2019), Haven Studios, Firewalk Studios, Firesprite and others, and in 2022 acquired Bungie, the developer of Destiny. It also expanded PlayStation Plus into tiered plans (Essential, Extra, Premium) and began releasing selected former exclusives on PC. Leadership changed in 2024 when Jim Ryan retired as president and CEO; Sony appointed Hideaki Nishino to lead the Platform Business Group and Hermen Hulst to lead the Studio Business Group as co-CEOs. The period also brought restructuring: layoffs across studios, the closure of some teams, and cancellation or delay of certain live-service projects. SIE remains the core of Sony's games business and a major contributor to group profits.
