Overview
Comic Ran Twins Sengoku Busho Retsuden (commonly shortened to Sengoku Busho Retsuden) was a Japanese manga anthology magazine published by LEED Publishing Co., Ltd. (株式会社リイド社), a Tokyo-based publisher founded in 1974 and headquartered in Koenji, Suginami. The magazine was dedicated entirely to manga and reading features about the Sengoku period (the Japanese "Warring States" era), a subject that had long been a staple of the publisher's jidaigeki (period drama) comics line. The title began in October 2003 as a special extra issue (増刊) of Comic Ran Twins, itself a sister publication of LEED's flagship period manga magazine Comic Ran. It was initially a quarterly, then moved to a bimonthly schedule, and in August 2008 it was spun off as an independent magazine. Issues were released on the 26th of even-numbered months, and collected volumes were published under LEED's SP Comics imprint. The magazine ceased publication with its August 2016 issue. Sengoku Busho Retsuden targeted a somewhat younger and more history-oriented readership than its sister magazines Comic Ran and Comic Ran Twins, combining serialized historical manga with non-manga reading columns on castles, battles, samurai life, food, and the occult lore of the era. Its editorial line-up changed over the years, with editors including Takamatsu Chihiko (to 2009), Nagasato Hiroyuki (2010–2011), and Saito Hitoshi (from 2012). Reported circulation was roughly 96,000 copies in 2007 and about 92,000 in 2008. As a brand, Sengoku Busho Retsuden is a niche period-manga magazine rather than a mass-market title. It belongs to LEED Publishing's stable of jidaigeki and entertainment magazines, which also includes Comic Ran, Comic Ran Twins, and the film magazine J Movie Magazine. The magazine's official page was hosted on LEED's website, and it maintained a presence on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @COMIC_SENGOKU.
History
Sengoku Busho Retsuden was launched in October 2003 as a special extra issue of Comic Ran Twins, the sister magazine of LEED Publishing's period-manga flagship Comic Ran. At the time it was a quarterly publication. It ran for 23 issues as an extra until June 2008, when it was spun off as an independent magazine in August 2008. Issues were then published on the 26th of even-numbered months, making it effectively a bimonthly title, and collected volumes appeared under the SP Comics label. The magazine was part of LEED Publishing's broader jidaigeki strategy. LEED itself traces its origins to 1960, when Saito Production was established as the parent body of the publisher, producing comics centered on the work of Takao Saito; the publishing division was separated and renamed LEED Publishing Co., Ltd. in November 1974. The company moved into middle-aged and older readers' period comics with the 1995 launch of Leed Comic Gallery (later Comic Ran) and the 1998 launch of the full-fledged period drama magazine Comic Ran. Comic Ran Twins was spun off in 2002, and Sengoku Busho Retsuden followed in 2003 as a Sengoku-focused extension of that line. Within the group, Sengoku Busho Retsuden was positioned as a more youth-oriented and history-focused title than Comic Ran and Comic Ran Twins. It combined serialized historical manga with reading columns on castles, battles, samurai thought, Sengoku fiction, daily life, food, and esoteric subjects such as Onmyodo. Contributors to the reading sections included Motoyama Kazuki, Kondo Yutaka, Takemitsu Makoto, Maki Hidehiko, Kawaguchi Motoo, Razwell Hosoki, and Nishitani Fumi. Reported circulation stood at 96,176 copies for the 2007 reporting year (September 2006–August 2007) and 91,962 for 2008 (October 2007–September 2008). The magazine was suspended after the August 2016 issue, ending roughly thirteen years of publication. Its official page remained on LEED's website, and it maintained a social media presence on X (formerly Twitter) as @COMIC_SENGOKU.
