Overview
Matsusaka Shopping Center MARM (松阪ショッピングセンターマーム) was a shopping center located in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, Japan. It was developed by AEON and operated by Matsusaka Commercial Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of AEON. The nickname MARM stands for 'MAtsusaka + Re (repetition) + Message,' meaning a shopping center that continuously sends information messages to Matsusaka. The center opened on October 27, 1992, and was also known as Matsusaka MARM, Jusco MARM, or Matsusaka Jusco. The building was a three-story steel and reinforced concrete structure with a total floor area of 25,777 m² and parking for 2,200 cars. The logo font was 'Motter Ombra,' the same as that used by AC Japan. Before its closure, the center housed the AEON Matsusaka store and 22 specialty stores. After the closure, the Matsusaka Community Center and Matsusaka Funae Post Office continued to operate, and from April 2022 the site was used as a mass vaccination center for COVID-19. In October 2023, the Matsusaka Community Center and Matsusaka Funae Post Office moved to the under-construction commercial facility AEON Town Matsusaka Funae. Demolition work was completed on June 30, 2024. The site was redeveloped, and on April 25, 2025, AEON Town Matsusaka Funae fully opened.
History
Matsusaka Shopping Center MARM opened on October 27, 1992, in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, Japan. It was developed by AEON and operated by Matsusaka Commercial Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of AEON. The nickname MARM stands for 'MAtsusaka + Re (repetition) + Message,' signifying a shopping center that continuously sends information messages to Matsusaka. The building was a three-story steel and reinforced concrete structure with a total floor area of 25,777 m² and parking for 2,200 cars. The logo font was 'Motter Ombra,' the same as that used by AC Japan. In 2000, the food floor operated by Flex Acole (later MaxValu Chubu, now MaxValu Tokai) Matsusaka MARM store closed on June 1, and on July 14, the Jusco Matsusaka store took over the food floor and reopened. On October 6, 2000, an expansion of the west side of the store was completed and reopened. On November 27, 2008, a male body was found in a FRP water tank behind the shopping center; the man had been missing since November 1 and is believed to have committed suicide. The shopping center reported to police and the health center, suspended use of tap water, removed products using tap water, and halted operations of tenants using tap water. From November 28, Jusco cleaned and disinfected food preparation areas, water dispensers, and ice machines, and operated using bottled water. The water tank was cleaned and disinfected, and only toilets used tap water. Specialty stores also cleaned and disinfected equipment and resumed operations on December 3. The shopping center decided to remove the old water tank and install a new one, starting construction on December 8, and began supplying water from the new tank on December 26. From January 5, 2009, they proceeded with work to renew the elevated water tank and the building's water pipes and equipment, and from January 29, water supply began using the new equipment. The construction cost about 100 million yen, and the center closed for the first time in nine years on January 28 to switch between old and new equipment. On May 4, 2013, the 'Mie Character Grand Athletic Meet' was held, where 10 mascot characters from Mie Prefecture competed in red and white teams. Due to the aging of the building, the center temporarily closed on January 31, 2022, at 18:00. The AEON Matsusaka store and 22 of the 26 specialty stores ceased operations (4 specialty stores closed by the end of January). The Matsusaka Community Center and Matsusaka Funae Post Office continued to operate. The Sanju Bank Matsusaka MARM branch operated until February 18, 2022. The AEON commercial sales department moved to AEON Mall Meiwa at the end of June. From April 2022, the site was used as a mass vaccination center for COVID-19. In October 2023, the Matsusaka Community Center and Matsusaka Funae Post Office moved to the under-construction commercial facility AEON Town Matsusaka Funae. On November 16, 2022, AEON Town Co., Ltd. announced that AEON Town Matsusaka Funae would open in spring 2025. MARM was to close by autumn 2023, and the site would be redeveloped. The second-floor Matsusaka Community Center was to move to a facility that would open earlier in autumn of the same year. Demolition work was completed on June 30, 2024.
