History
The origins of the two predecessor companies date to Japan's period of modernization. In 1878, founder Shimada Magokichi entered the Shinagawa Works Bureau established by the Meiji government as a foundation for domestic glass industry promotion, learning the latest glass tableware production techniques from British engineer J. Speed. In 1888, Shimada Glass Manufacturing was founded in Kawasaki Village, Osaka, producing tableware and lamps using the imported glassblowing technique. In 1902, Sasaki Sojiro Shoten was founded in Kanda, Tokyo, exporting lamps to Hawaii, China and Southeast Asian countries. In 1917, it began operating its own factory, establishing an integrated production-to-sales system. In 1928, it introduced the latest fully automatic pressing machine from the United States and began manufacturing tumblers. In 1931, it succeeded in mass production of lead crystal glass. In 1940, it invented a printing machine for glass and began Japan's first screen printing production. In 1967, it began production of Japan's first strengthened glass for tableware rims, 'HS Hardstrong'. In 1982, a state-of-the-art pollution-free factory for the highest-grade crystal glass was completed in Sumida, Tokyo. In 2002, the houseware division of Toyo Glass Co., Ltd. and Sasaki Glass Co., Ltd. were integrated to form Toyo-Sasaki Glass Co., Ltd., and a new Chiba factory in Yachiyo, Chiba was completed, combining the latest automation equipment and a handmade division. In 2005, the Chiba factory obtained ISO 14001 certification. In 2006, it developed high-grade soda-lime glass 'Fine Clear'.
