Overview
DuPont is the brand of DuPont de Nemours, Inc., a U.S. science and specialty-materials company headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. Its modern identity is built around engineered materials, components and technical solutions used by manufacturers rather than around consumer retail products. The company serves markets including electronics and semiconductors, transportation, construction, water purification, healthcare, industrial safety and selected advanced-materials applications. The business traces its origins to 1802, when French-American chemist Éleuthère Irénée du Pont established a black-powder mill on the Brandywine Creek in Delaware. Explosives provided the company’s initial commercial foundation, but DuPont gradually became known for industrial research and for applying chemistry to large-scale manufacturing. During the twentieth century it expanded into films, coatings, fibers, polymers, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals and other technology-intensive businesses. Products associated with the historical DuPont name include Duco automotive finishes, cellophane, nylon, Teflon, Kevlar and Tyvek, although ownership and portfolio status have changed over time as businesses were sold, spun off or transferred to successor companies. A defining feature of DuPont’s history has been repeated portfolio transformation. In the early twentieth century, the company developed one of the United States’ significant industrial research organizations and used research to move beyond explosives. It later pursued diversification through acquisitions and internal development, entering agriculture, fibers, specialty chemicals, biotechnology, electronics and performance materials. Some historically prominent activities, including Conoco, Invista, pharmaceutical operations, agricultural operations and commodity-materials businesses, were subsequently divested or separated. In 2015 DuPont and Dow Chemical announced an all-stock merger. The transaction closed in 2017, creating DowDuPont, a holding company intended to be divided into three focused public companies. In 2019 the materials-science operations became Dow Inc., the agriculture operations became Corteva, and the remaining specialty-products operations retained the DuPont name. The present DuPont is therefore not identical to either the pre-2017 DuPont or the short-lived DowDuPont group; it is the specialty-materials successor created by that restructuring. Since the separation, DuPont has continued to reshape its portfolio around higher-value, technology-led businesses. It sold its Nutrition & Biosciences business to International Flavors & Fragrances in 2021, divested Clean Technologies, sold substantial Mobility & Materials activities to Celanese in 2022, and sold the Delrin homopolymer acetal business in 2023. At the same time, it has emphasized electronics, water, healthcare and protection-related applications. In 2024 it announced a plan to separate its electronics and water businesses into independent public companies, but in January 2025 it said that the water business would remain within DuPont while the electronics separation would continue. The company remains active and internationally recognized, but its product mix and corporate boundaries continue to evolve.
History
DuPont began in 1802 when Éleuthère Irénée du Pont, who had emigrated from France to the United States, established a gunpowder works beside the Brandywine Creek in Delaware. The company’s early success came from manufacturing explosives, but the business later broadened its technical capabilities and became increasingly dependent on formal research. After a change in family ownership in 1902, the company’s descendants supported a more ambitious industrial strategy and helped establish the Eastern Laboratory, an important early corporate research facility. During the twentieth century, DuPont used research, process engineering and acquisitions to move into new industries. It entered cellophane production in the 1920s and developed moisture-resistant film that made the material more useful for food packaging. Research into coatings produced Duco automotive finishes, helping automobile manufacturers accelerate painting and offer more colors. The company subsequently developed or commercialized major synthetic materials and fibers, including nylon, fluoropolymer products, aramid fibers, engineering plastics and high-performance films. These technologies gave the DuPont name a durable association with industrial innovation, even when individual product businesses later moved to other corporate owners. The company diversified substantially after the Second World War, expanding into agriculture, textiles, polymers, electronics, coatings, pharmaceuticals and other chemical markets. Its strategy combined internal research with large acquisitions. In 1981 DuPont acquired Conoco, one of the largest takeovers in U.S. corporate history at the time, and later divested it. During the 1990s it expanded agricultural biotechnology and seed interests, acquired additional coatings and materials activities, and reorganized pharmaceutical operations. It also sold or separated several historical businesses, including Invista and other textile operations, as management increasingly emphasized technology-intensive and higher-margin activities. DuPont’s history also includes major environmental and public-health controversies. The production and use of certain fluorinated chemicals, including PFOA-related substances, led to litigation, regulatory scrutiny and criticism concerning alleged knowledge, disclosure and environmental contamination. These issues have influenced the company’s legal exposure, reputation and decisions about chemical portfolios. The company has also promoted environmental-management programs, safer substitutes and sustainability goals; those commitments have been central to its corporate communications but do not erase the continuing significance of the controversies. In December 2015 Dow Chemical and DuPont announced an intended merger of equals. The transaction closed on August 31, 2017, creating DowDuPont. The new holding company was designed from the outset to separate into three specialized public companies. In 2019 the materials-science business became Dow Inc., the agriculture business became Corteva, and the specialty-products business became the present DuPont. This sequence means that the current DuPont is a successor to only part of the historical company. After the 2019 separation, DuPont pursued a focused specialty-materials strategy. It transferred Nutrition & Biosciences to IFF in 2021, sold Clean Technologies, and in 2022 sold most of its Mobility & Materials business to Celanese. In 2023 it sold the Delrin homopolymer acetal business. These transactions reduced exposure to some mature or cyclical materials markets while strengthening the company’s emphasis on electronics, water, healthcare, industrial protection and advanced engineering applications. In May 2024 DuPont announced plans to separate its electronics and water businesses into independent companies. The proposed structure was intended to give each business a more focused strategy and capital-allocation profile. In January 2025 DuPont changed course on the water separation and said the water business would remain within the company, while the electronics separation continued. In March 2025 it announced designated leadership for the planned electronics company. DuPont therefore remains an active public specialty-materials company, but its portfolio is still being reshaped through separations, acquisitions and targeted investment.

Vermont sues Saint-Gobain, DuPont and 3M over PFAS contamination in Bennington County
The state of Vermont filed a lawsuit against multiple manufacturers, alleging that PFAS from former factories contaminated properties and well water in Bennington and Shaftsbury. The state seeks payment from Saint-Gobain, DuPont and 3M to remove PFOA chemicals from the water, prevent future exposure, connect affected homes to the municipal water system, and admit negligence.
2010
Agricultural biotechnology and genetically modified soybean controversy
Historical reporting and secondary accounts associate DuPont’s agricultural biotechnology activities with public controversy over genetically modified soybeans. The available reference material does not establish a single definitive incident or resolution, so the topic requires further verification.
2000
PFOA and fluorochemical environmental controversy
DuPont faced litigation, regulatory scrutiny and public criticism concerning PFOA and related fluorochemicals, including allegations about the company’s knowledge of potential health and environmental risks and the handling of related information. The matter became one of the most consequential environmental controversies associated with the historical DuPont business.
Marketing campaigns
- 2024Science-led innovation and sustainability employer messaging
Global · including China
DuPont’s sales and marketing communications presented employees as ambassadors for science-based solutions and emphasized customer focus, innovation, sustainability, safety, inclusion and community contribution.
