Overview
Kunlun Tech (昆仑万维) is a Chinese internet technology company headquartered in Beijing. It was founded in 2008 by Zhou Yahui and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's ChiNext board under the ticker 300418. The company began as an online game developer and publisher, building a portfolio of web and mobile games for both domestic and overseas markets, and later expanded into internet platform businesses, most notably the Opera web browser after acquiring the Opera Software consumer business. Over time Kunlun Tech has positioned itself as a globally oriented internet group, with operations spanning game publishing, browser and information-distribution products, social and entertainment applications, and overseas internet services. Its revenue base is unusually international for a Chinese internet company, with a large share of users and income coming from markets outside China. In the 2020s the company pivoted heavily toward artificial intelligence, developing and releasing large language models and AI-generated content tools under its own brands, and promoting an "all-in AI" strategy. It has also invested in AI music, AI search, and AI social products, aiming to combine its overseas distribution strength with generative AI capabilities. Kunlun Tech is a publicly traded company and remains an active player in China's internet and AI sectors, though it is smaller and less consumer-visible than the country's platform giants. Its brand identity rests on a combination of gaming heritage, global internet products, and an aggressive AI research and product agenda.
History
Kunlun Tech was founded in 2008 by Zhou Yahui as an online game company. In its early years it focused on web games and later mobile games, building a publishing and development business that reached users in China and, increasingly, overseas. This international orientation became a defining trait of the company. A major turning point came with the acquisition of the consumer browser business of Norway's Opera Software, which gave Kunlun Tech control of the Opera brand and a large global user base for browser and information-distribution products. The company subsequently operated Opera as a core platform asset, alongside its gaming and other internet services. Kunlun Tech listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's ChiNext board, giving it access to public capital markets and enabling further acquisitions and investments in internet and entertainment assets. In the 2020s the company repositioned around artificial intelligence. It announced an AI-focused strategy, developed large language models, and launched AI-generated content products including AI music and AI search tools. These efforts were intended to leverage its overseas distribution channels and to diversify beyond games and browsers. The company remains headquartered in Beijing and continues to operate as a publicly listed, globally oriented internet and AI group.
