Overview
Embraer (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica) is a Brazilian aerospace corporation headquartered in São José dos Campos, São Paulo. Founded in 1969 as a state-owned enterprise under the Brazilian Ministry of Aeronautics, it was privatized in the mid-1990s and is today a publicly traded company listed on the B3 exchange in São Paulo and on the New York Stock Exchange. It is widely regarded as one of the largest aerospace companies in the world and the leading industrial exporter of high-technology goods from Brazil. Embraer operates through several business segments. Its commercial aviation unit builds regional jets — most notably the E-Jet family (E170/E175/E190/E195) and the newer E2 generation — which are flown by regional airlines and mainline carriers worldwide. Its executive aviation division produces the Phenom, Legacy and Praetor business jet families. The defense and security segment supplies military transport aircraft such as the KC-390, the Super Tucano light attack/trainer aircraft, surveillance systems and defense electronics. Embraer also has a services and support arm covering maintenance, repair, overhaul, training and parts. Embraer has a significant international footprint, with operations, subsidiaries and joint ventures in the United States, Europe, Portugal and China, and a global customer support network. It competes primarily with Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and ATR in regional and business aviation. In 2018–2020 Embraer pursued a strategic partnership with Boeing covering commercial aviation, which was ultimately dissolved in 2020; the company subsequently restructured and refocused on its own programs, including the E2 family and the turboprop concept. Embraer remains a flagship of Brazilian engineering and a major employer in the São Paulo region.
History
Embraer was created in 1969 by the Brazilian government, which merged existing aeronautical institutes into a single state-owned company under the Ministry of Aeronautics. Its early success came with the EMB 110 Bandeirante, a twin-turboprop commuter aircraft that established Brazil as a credible aircraft producer. The company later developed the EMB 120 Brasília turboprop and, in the 1980s, the AMX tactical fighter in partnership with Italian firms. In the 1990s Embraer faced financial difficulty and was privatized in 1994, with a consortium of Brazilian and foreign investors taking control. The turnaround was driven by the ERJ 145 regional jet family, which became a commercial success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, followed by the larger E-Jet family (E170/E175/E190/E195) launched in the 2000s. These aircraft made Embraer a leading player in the regional jet market alongside Bombardier. Embraer diversified into executive aviation with the Legacy and Phenom families and into defense with the Super Tucano and later the KC-390 transport. It also expanded internationally, establishing operations in the United States, Europe and China. In 2018 Embraer agreed to a strategic partnership with Boeing covering commercial aviation, but the deal was terminated in 2020. The company subsequently restructured, continued development of the E-Jet E2 family, and pursued new programs including a turboprop concept and defense exports. Embraer remains listed on the B3 and NYSE and is a major Brazilian exporter.

2019
EU antitrust scrutiny of Boeing–Embraer transaction
The European Commission set October 4 as the deadline for its preliminary review of Boeing’s proposed acquisition of control of Embraer’s commercial aircraft business. The report says EU competition officials had questioned suppliers and competitors about market concentration and would launch a full investigation after the preliminary review, which could take up to five months.
