Overview
Ogilvy is one of the world's most recognized advertising and marketing services brands. Founded in 1948 by David Ogilvy as Hewitt, Ogilvy, Benson & Mather in New York, the agency became known for its research-driven, brand-building approach and for campaigns such as Hathaway shirts and Rolls-Royce. It was renamed Ogilvy & Mather and expanded internationally, becoming a global network with offices in major markets. In 1989 it became part of WPP Group through WPP's acquisition of Ogilvy Group. In 2018 WPP simplified the brand to "Ogilvy," combining its advertising, public relations, and consulting operations under a single identity. Ogilvy provides advertising, brand strategy, digital, public relations, and customer experience services to clients across industries. It is headquartered in New York and operates as a subsidiary of WPP, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. The agency is known for its "Big Ideal" and "Twin Peaks" positioning and for its focus on brand purpose and effectiveness. It remains a flagship creative network within WPP's portfolio.
History
Ogilvy was founded in 1948 by David Ogilvy, a former chef, researcher, and salesman, as Hewitt, Ogilvy, Benson & Mather in New York. The agency gained early fame for its print campaigns, including the Hathaway shirt man with the eyepatch and the Rolls-Royce advertisement, which exemplified Ogilvy's belief in research-based, factual advertising. In 1965 the agency was renamed Ogilvy & Mather. It expanded globally, opening offices in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and became one of the largest advertising networks. In 1989, WPP Group acquired Ogilvy Group in a hostile takeover, making Ogilvy & Mather part of WPP. The agency continued to operate as a global network, with Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide serving as the parent for its advertising, direct marketing, and public relations units. In 2018, WPP simplified the brand to "Ogilvy," merging its advertising, PR, and consulting operations under a single P&L and identity. The move was part of a broader restructuring by WPP to simplify its agency model. Ogilvy has since positioned itself around "Borderless Creativity" and integrated services. It remains headquartered in New York and is a key creative agency within WPP.
