It was approved for establishment by the Tianjin Municipal People's Government as a large state-owned enterprise. Its predecessor, Tianjin Metro General Company, was established on September 1, 2000. On November 11, 2008, Tianjin Metro General Company was restructured into Tianjin Metro Group Co., Ltd., with registered capital of RMB 7.186 billion. Its controlling shareholder was Tianjin Infrastructure Construction & Investment Group Co., Ltd. In 2014, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tianjin Rail Transit Group, while Tianjin Infrastructure Construction & Investment Group continued to hold metro equity through the rail transit group.
